I used this picture last time, too.Ring the bells and sound the alarms, it’s World Environment Day, today, right now!   Unless you’re in Australia, and it was yesterday, and you missed it.   Anyhow, to mark this extremely extreme occasion, I have penned some limericks.   Enjoy.

There once was a man named Gene
Who had an idea so keen
“I just have to say
We should have a whole day
Dedicated to making Earth green!”

World Envirnoment Day is June 5th, and Treehugger.com, one of our favorite sites for environmental news and views, had the good fortune of being able to interview Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) for the upcoming occasion. Steiner is in year two of his four year post, and manages over 1000 people in 42 countries in his efforts to bring the public and private sectors together on issues of environmental sustainabiliy and social equity.  

Steiner advocates for a GDP generated by nature, a globally green economy, and says that developed countries “should shoulder their full responsibility for having used the atmosphere as a dustbin for some 200 years. The interview outlines Mr. Steiner´s suggestions for government incentive programs for environmental sustainability, as well as a preview of the environmental topics he´ll be covering on World Environment Day.

Is it the world, or an apple?We over at the blog section here have mentioned before our appreciation of flickr, the photo-hosting site.   Now, at it again for a good cause, flickr has teamed up with World Environment day (happening June 5, in case you hadn’t marked your calendar), and is asking you (yes, YOU) to upload your pictures that have to do with the event.   From the flickr website:

World Environment Day is June 5 and we invite you to share photos that celebrate environmental awareness. This year’s World Environment Day focuses on climate change and low carbon economies and the host for this year’s UN event is Wellington, New Zealand.
