I’ve been keeping up with most of the Burma Can’t Wait videos (we’ve previously blogged about videos from Sarah Silverman , Will Ferrell, and Ellen Page) and I really like that they are using humor to discuss a heartbreaking issue.   Check out this recent video featuring Hank Azaria and Billy Baldwin.

American Outrage (Beth Gage & George Gage, USA, 2007; 56m )

screening : Sat Jun 14: 4:15 and Mon Jun 16: 1:30 & 9

American Outrage focuses on the Dann sisters and their fight to keep their Western Shoshone lands. In 1863, the Shoshone signed a treaty with the US allowing them to pass on their lands. That treaty, The Treaty of Ruby Valley, was a treaty of good faith and in no way signified that the Shoshone were giving up their lands. However, in 1974, Mary and Carrie Dann, elderly Shoshone grandmothers, found themselves accused of trespassing on their own land. The lengths that the government went to to remove the Dann sisters and their livestock from their property is astounding.

We’ve been featuring some videos from the Burma Can’t Wait campaign including those from Sarah Silverman and Will Ferrell. Yesterday’s video starred Ellen Page from Juno sharing a powerful message about dictator Than Shwe and how he has terrorized the people of Burma behind closed doors (his most recent crime is denying aid to desperate victims of the Burma cyclone).

Jenny McCarthy, Toni Braxton, Bill Cosby and other stars want you to know that today is Autism Awareness Day. You may not know that because it’s the first one ever. Toni Braxton, whose son has autism, is a spokeswoman for Autism Speaks and is helping raise awareness about autism. The 6-time Grammy Award winner feels “privileged to have the opportunity to help advance this cause in any way I possibly can.” Jenny McCarthy, and Robert Smigel of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog fame, also each have Autistic sons and are active in organizing around the issue. And Lionel Richie, Matthew Broderick and Bill Cosby fundraise for the cause.

And on April 13th, Jon Stewart will host the “Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education” in New York City. The show will air live on Comedy Central at 8pm and and will feature standup routines, sketches and short films from Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Steve Carell, Jonah Hill, Tina Fey, Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert, Sarah Silverman, Amy Poehler, Matthew Broderick, Jonah Hill, Kevin James, Rosie O’Donnell and Susie Essman. But what is autism? The Autism Speaks Website explains

When Will Ferrell installed solar panels on his home, he tapped into star power, too; through the BP Solar Neighbors Program, Ferrell’s solar power purchase sponsored the installation of a 48-panel solar system for the St. George Hotel, a permanent residence for the formerly homeless run by the Skid Row Housing Trust.

The St. George’s solar system was unveiled today by actor/director Ed Norton, who helped create the BP Solar Neighbors Program, and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The Solar Neighbors Program donates a solar system to a low income family for each solar system installed by a celebrity. Norton explained the program’s mission:

“Many people perceive environmentally friendly practices as costly and available only to the wealthy”We need to expand our awareness of the many ways environmentally sustainable development and construction can apply to affordable housing. The installation of the BP solar panels on the St.George is a great example of a dynamic solution to our intensifying economic and environmental crisis.”

Norton’s green do-goodiness is in his DNA; he’s on the board of the Enterprise Community Partners, a non-profit co-founded by his grandfather, James Rouse. Enterprise, whose goal is “to see that all low-income people in the United States have the opportunity for fit and affordable housing and to move up and out of poverty into the mainstream of American life,” is a partner in the BP Solar Neighbors Program. How’s that for a shining example of the golden rule?
