A recent scientific breakthrough has discovered drugs that drastically improve the fitness of subjects without them having to do one bit of work.   The research, performed at the Salk Institute in San Diego, California, has isolated two drugs that did wonders for the physical condition of so called “couch potato mice”.

One of the drugs, named Aicar, increased the endurance of mice on a treadmill by 44% after only four weeks of treatment without the test subject performing one other iota of physical exercise to get in shape during the trial period.   The other drug increased endurance by 75% but needed to be combined with physical exercise in order to gain the full effect, which if you’re looking for something for nothing, isn’t really where it’s at.   Scientists say the findings should translate over well to humans, who use essentially the same genes as mice to control muscle tone.

HBO has announced plans to develop a show abut the herbal weight loss industry called Fat Sells:

It’s the magic pill theory,” Dave Broome (25/7) said. “As a society, we don’t care what the side effects are to these pills. I thought it would be an interesting world to look into, the fact that it’s a market unregulated by the FDA. [Variety]

Sounds interesting to me, even more so because Forest Whitaker is set to produce and I’ve always been a big Forest Whitaker fan. Plot wise, I’m excited for a program that examines the effects of what we put in our body - this is something everyone could stand to do a little more often.

Australians have surpassed Americans in obesity, decisively taking the title of Most Obese Country on Earth in a stunning blow to the national identity of the USA. If you thought the Land Down Under was all about buff, bronzed beach bods frolicking on sunny south Pacific beaches, think again. A new study done by the Baker Heart Institute reported that 70% of men and 60% of women aged 45-65 in Australia were obese, having body mass indices that exceeded 25.

Dr. Simon Stewart, head of preventative cardiology at the Baker Heart Institute told Agence France Press,”As we send our athletes off to the Olympics let’s reflect on the fact that we would win the gold medal problem now in the world fat Olympics if there was such a thing,”.

I also was disgusted by the show Bulging Brides but it wasn’t until Feministing.com posted this piece that I realized I wasn’t alone in my discomfort. The shows tag-line is “the perfect day is still pounds away.” First of all, there is no such thing as a perfect day or a perfect body. Secondly, shouldn’t happiness on your wedding day come from the actual marriage and not from the size of your wedding dress?
