As if video games don’t already glorify violence and degrade people’s minds! I mean there are video games encouraging players to beat up prostitutes and take their money; to kill cops; to set people on fire and then urinate on them. And now, thanks to RiverWired, there is a video game, which urges players to fight to restore coral reefs. The object in this perverse game, Battle For The Coral Reef, is to clear the ocean of waste and bring back coral life. Just what we need: Another video game teaching our children to take care

Ready to for coral? Jump in and play the game!

It is understandably difficult to pay attention, be outraged, and be depressed by all of the tragedy, atrocities, and terror that surrounds us. At the same time, art, film, and photography have an uncanny ability to snap us out of our desensitized states, and turn the political into personal, and the news into news worthy. Below are some recent photos and click here to see an amazing photo essay from Human Rights Watch of people in Gaza who are being denied medical treatment by the blockade.

This story sent pangs to my heart.

Two teenagers have been arrested after killing a seven-year-old girl by immitating moves from the Mortal Kombat games say prosecutors. Heather Trujillo, 16, and Lamar Roberts, 17, “hit, kicked and body-slammed” Trujillo’s half sister, Zoe Garcia, until she lost consciousness. The two teens were supposed to be babysitting little Garcia, on December 6, when they seized the opportunity to drink alcohol and immitate Mortal Kombat moves on the child. Witnesses say Roberts performed a back kick on Garcia, from which she did not get up. He then cracked an egg in her mouth, apparently to check if she was faking unconsciousness. When Garcia regained consciousness Trujillo sent her to bed, according to the documents, but she stopped breathing 15 minutes later.

I’d like to blame the video game industry. I’d love to point a finger and say it’s all the fault of a multi-million dollar business and not blame two very young human beings. But, while the video game industry does have it’s fair share of absurdly violent flaws, the blame here most certainly goes on the two idiot teenagers who got drunk and killed a kid! They killed a kid! Even if the kid didn’t die, they beat up a kid?!

While my rage over the stupidity of this incident is strong I am sure it doesn’t even compare to the guilt these two teens are feeling.
