The US Senate approved a $13 Billion funding package for Amtrak earlier this month, nearly doubling the previous funding for the National Railway. The move comes amidst an amazing confluence of factors, in a world rapidly changing before our very eyes, chief amongst them the record price of gasoline over the past year and the subsequent increase to record train ridership and decrease in the power of the major automobile manufacturers.

With the House of Representatives having past a similar measure last week, the bill now moves to the Oval Office to await the President’s signature in order to be enacted. Not suprisingly, the Bush Administration had threatened to veto Amtrak funding earlier this year, but with the recent passage of the legislation with near veto-proof majorities in both chambers of Congress it is unlikely, though still possible, that Bush would risk the unnecessary embarrassment of having a veto turned over this late in his term.

Let’s face it, bike helmets have virtually no fashion sense whatsoever. We’re all happy to overlook this fact given that these much needed devices do wonders for protecting our noggins should we have the misfortune of crashing. Still the typical protective helmet looks more at home on top of one of the Transformers than on a fashion conscious bicyclist cruising around town on two wheels.

All that’s about to change however with the new line of styled out bike helmets from the Danish company Yakkay. It’s a simple concept to be sure. Take a hard, spherical bicycle helmet (seen below) then fit a cool looking hat on top of it and voila!, you’ve gone from trashy to classy by simply giving your bike helmet a cover of its own (like those above).

New York City has announced a plan to convert two of Broadway’s four lanes into a public esplanade. The surprise move will turn half of the Great White Way between Herald Square and 42nd Street into public space featuring a dedicated bike lane alongside a pedestrian walkway with room for outdoor cafe seating and plant and flower boxes. The esplanade, which the city is calling Broadway Boulevard, is set to open mid-August of this summer.

This is not the first restructuring of traffic patterns on Broadway this year however. A few weeks ago I noticed for the first time that downtown near City Hall on down to Wall Street, automobile Broadway had been reduced to one lane, with the other lanes dedicated to the city and regional bus lines that bring so many people down to the city’s second largest business district.

Megabus.com is bringing its highly affordable ground transportation operation to the East Coast of the United States. Starting Sunday the British-founded bus operation began running routes from a New York City hub serving Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston, Washington DC, Toronto, Atlantic City, NJ, and Buffalo, NY. Megabus is offering online bookings for free for its first week of operations, through June 5th. After that advance online bookings can be as low as $1 for certain routes, with a 50 cent booking fee.

How do they do it? Megabus.com operates under the same model as low cost European air carriers such as EasyJet and RyanAir, with the earlier the ticket booking the cheaper the fare is. Also, the fare is just the start, with additional charges being levied for various extras on the bus. However there are free services on the bus as well including video and WiFi starting June 9th.

America suffers from a collective case of do-gooder deafness: we have a hard time hearing a message when it’s delivered by a dorky academic or an unattractive activist. We’re all ears, though, when celebrities speak out about their pet causes, or their pets, or whatever. So, in acknowledgement of the fact that I, as a mere blogger, can only hope to influence so many people, I’d like to enlist the aid of some of our most oogled and Googled celebrities to help America combat climate change and overconsumption:

1. Britney Spears: Britney’s evidently on the road to recovery after some much needed r “Ëœn’ r. Here are three more “r’s” I’d love to see Britney promote: reduce, reuse and recycle. Our landfills are overflowing with post-consumer crap and the oceans are clogged up with plastic; what better time for Britney to redefine white trash! Recommended reading/viewing: Garbage Land by Elizabeth Royte; The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard.
