A few years back, a reporter named Chris Coyle from San Diego State University’s paper, the Daily Aztec, wrote an article titled “Top 20 Scariest Songs.”  I know this, because I was quoted in it.   I think, instead of giving you the mere highlights, I’m just going to go ahead and copy/paste the whole damn thing, because I don’t really care if Coyle gets angry I’ve stolen his work.   And so, in celebration of Halloween, I present to you the Top Twenty Scariest Songs:

20. “Spectra Sonic Sound” - The Nation of Ulysses

19. “Blur the Technicolor” - White Zombie

• While your palms are sweating profusely, you can’t help but feel like you’re trapped in some futuristic horror house as Rob Zombie belches out barely-audible haunting ramblings.

18. “Not to Touch the Earth” - The Doors

• Jim Morrison does his typical unorthodox poetic preaching, but the chiming keyboards Ray Manzarek provides on top of the bass couldn’t be any more perfect for an Edgar Alan Poe flick - a scene in which a psychopath gets closer and closer to a defenseless young woman.

Earth Day is tomorrow, and though many of us are actively attempting to help the environment little by little every day, now’s as good a time as any to compile a list of quotes to circulate to provide the impetus for some fresh, green thinking. 1. I think the environment should be put in the category of our national security. Defense of our resources is just as important as defense abroad. Otherwise, what is there to defend? - Robert Redford

If you missed these excellent Top Ten recent releases to inspire social change, add them to your online video queue or head down to your nearest video store, grab some microwave popcorn, and let the inspiration begin!

Can movies inspire real change? Of course they can! Films change people, who in turn change the world. Although most folks go to the movies for entertainment, film can affect your tastes and preferences, your desires, your ethical and political views, and in some cases, even your perception of things like time and space. On a macro level, films can highlight important issues in a world where visual media has become a predominant source of knowledge and information.

Watching movies with a message makes your world a little bit bigger than it was before, but if you’re like me and have a busy schedule, it can be hard to make time to see every great film that comes out each week. Thank goodness for DVDs! Don’t forget to at Ecoencore.org to find out how you can donate your used DVDs to help out some of your favorite environmental causes.

1) Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington? - Frank Popper’s excellent documentary about Jeff Smith, a political science professor at Washington University who decides to run for congress in 2004. Popper follows the engaging young candidate on the campaign trail, and proves that an unknown individual with no financial backing can make a difference.
