Combining literature, theatre and music, a group of passionate folks are trying to promote a non-violent and healthy world.

Circle of Health International (COHI) is an international non-governmental organization that seeks to empower women’s health care professionals in crisis settings. Founded in 2004, COHI currently works in Louisiana, Israel/Palestine, Tanzania, Tibet, Sri Lanka, and Sudan.COHI operates on the tenets of consensus-based decision-making, non-violence, and the grassroots model of social change.

On March 26th a group of New York based artists and activists will produce a performance of A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer to support COHI’s efforts. Edited by V-day founder Eve Ensler, A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer features pieces from “Until the Violence Stops,” the international tour that brings the issue of violence against women and girls to the forefront of our consciousness. The collection includes pieces by Maya Angelou, Kathy Najimy,Edward Albee, Alice Walker and many more.

This Valentine’s day, as I promised readers last week, you don’t have to choose between buying your loved one a diamond necklace made by enslaved children, or a hemp necklace made under humane conditions (probably in Berkeley). John Legend, R&B singer of the hit song “Show Me,” is taking poverty action to new levels with his Show Me Campaign to help end world poverty through sustainable development. Legend launched the campaign last year, inspired by the theme from his song, in which he charts a conversation with God about the state of the world, and by a trip to Ghana. He said he came away from his trip to Africa with the realization that the fight against poverty was not too vast to get involved, and that change was actually possible.

Legend was also inspired by “The End of Poverty,” written by Jeffrey Sachs ““ a renowned economist and director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. The two came together last year to moderate a Q&A on global poverty, followed by a musical set by Legend. The Show Me Campaign has since teamed up with Millenium Promise to help lift the village of Mbola, Tanzania out of extreme poverty. by visiting the Show Me Campaign online and see how you can get involved in their sustainable development efforts.
