Hoping to be regarded more for affluence rather than effluence, Italy’s Latina Province, has called upon an MIT professor to help redesign the Pontine Marshes to filter pollution from upstream factories and farms. Professor Alan Berger, founder of P-REX, seeks to improve the severely damaged wetlands by:

“Redirecting water flow, moving hills, building islands and planting new species to absorb pollution, to create natural, though “artificial,” landscapes that can ultimately sustain themselves.”

While increased regulation are needed to reduce the high levels of pollution, Professor Berger’s approach serves as an excellent model for addressing the environmental damage caused by humans. Because the farms, factories, and resorts in the area cannot be completely shut down, this approach offers ecological remedies that take into account the economical rewards of the area.

This is not an Eagles cheerleaderI wasn’t going to write about this, because we’re a family site, but I suppose we could mention that the 2009 calendar for the Philadelphia Cheerleaders is what is being referred to as “eco-sexy.” What, exactly, does that mean? Well, ecorazzi tells us that,

And it’s not only the recycled paper that’s got people, ahem, excited — the women featured are also wearing organic cotton bikinis (or bikinis made from recycled plastic soda bottles) and flashing some additional green elements.

So. I’m not putting any pictures up from this thing, but the description of one cheerleader’s photo reads

DEVAN is wearing an organic cotton top with windmill graphic and organic cotton bikini bottoms; windmill necklace symbolizing alternative energy; pendant imprinted with the word ‘green’ made from silver collected from old film which was combined with an organic binder and fired to create a silver medium that is 99.9% pure silver; shell bracelet; stone earrings. [philly.com]

I suppose if we’re objectifying, it might as well be in a green fashion. You can takepart here to pre-order the calendar. Or, you could always takepart here and buy a Sierra Club calendar, too.  That might also help the environment.

The State of Hawaii has enacted a new law requiring solar powered water heaters in all new homes starting in 2010.  The installation of a solar water heater will be required to receive a building permit in the state.

Hawaii is currently more dependent on fossil fuels for its energy than any other state. The legislation could eventually cut energy usage in the Aloha State by 30% once full implementation is reached.  However state officials and environmental advocates have even higher hopes for renewable sources on the islands.  The state has set a goal that at least 70% of energy sources must be renewable by the year 2030.  “Achieving this goal is nearly impossible without widespread use of solar water heaters.” said Hawaii Sierra Club director Jeff Mikulina.

So some of us hadn’t been too bent out of shape with the skyrocketing fuel prices because 1) Some of us are selling our cars anyway, and 2) Some of us kind of hoped this would necessitate a rise in renewable energies. However, there are some predictions floating around out there which state that may not be the case. The International Herald Tribune tells us,

According to Climate Strategies, an international climate policy network based at the University of Cambridge, one of the likeliest consequences [of high fuel costs] could be a rush to highly polluting technologies to extract more fossil fuels from different sources, including technologies pioneered during the last century to extract liquid fuels from coal.

The thought is that, instead of spending on innovation to combat fuel prices, governments and companies might instead revert back to tried and true, yet dirtier, practices to meet energy demand.

Latino voters are overwhelmingly concerned about the environment and global warming, according to a national survey conducted by the Sierra Club. Previous studies show that Latino communities in the United States are disproportionately affected by climate change and environmental pollution, with some 91% living in urban areas where polluted air increases the risk of illnesses like cancer and asthma.

The poll also showed that:

**Overwhelmingly (80%) said that energy and environmental issues have “a lot” or “some” impact on the quality of life and health of their families. These voters have a high level of exposure to toxic sites.
