As I got ready for bed last night I heard the continuous flutter of helicoptors, and checked the news to discover a massive protest against the passing of California’s Proposition 8 roaming the streets of Hollywood.

What began as a relatively small gathering of supporters of same-sex marriage, quickly escalated into a peaceful march of nearly 2000 people, with similar numbers reported in San Fransisco.  There were only a few arrests, with one report of a protester being tackled

The Rainbow Warrior, one of Greenpeace’s three ships, has seen a wedding, a funeral, a sinking by the French military, and, oh yeah, a few protests.  The 180-foot eco-schooner’s latest mission is campaigning against new coal-fired power plants in Southern England.  And seriously, if you’re going to take a noble stance for environmental justice, it might as well be at the bow of this bad-ass ship:

Egyptian Blogger Karim el-Beheiri was freed from an Egyptian jail Sunday after weeks of imprisonment. El-Beheiri was locked for protesting price hikes and salary cuts at a factory in the industrial city of El-Mahalla El-Kubra in the Nile Delta along with fellow protesters Tarek Amin and Kamal al-Fayoumy.

While incarcerated el-Beheiri says the trio were subjected to weeks of torture. “We were subjected to electric shocks, to beatings and there was no food and or drink for the first few days,” he told Agence France Press one day after his release.

An Egyptian government official from the Ministry of the Interior denied the torture claims, saying “These are false accusations. Everything took place within a framework of human rights.”
