Director Werner Herzog and Actor Nicolas Cage are currently in preproduction on a project based on the Abel Ferrara film, “Bad Lieutenant”. According to an interview with Herzog by Defamer, the new movie will not be a remake, per se, of the unforgettable 1992 original which starred Harvey Keitel as a crooked, corrupt, drug addicted, degenerate gambler New York City Police Department Lieutenant who chooses to bet against the Mets at the wrong time. Rather, Herzog explained, he and Cage will do a continuation of the character.  At least that’s what I think he said:

“Yes, but its not a remake. It’s like, for example, you wouldn’t call a new James Bond movie a remake of the previous one - although the name of the bad lieutenant is a different one, and the story is completely different.”

In another departure from Ferrara’s version, the new film will be set and shot in New Orleans, a decision Herzog says producer Edward R. Pressman - who also produced the original - made because of tax incentives, but that intrigues the director nonetheless. “…I thought to myself: “We have seen a lot of New York in movies; we have not seen New Orleans in feature films.” Or very few feature films. After Katrina it’s a particularly interesting set-up. The neglect and politics after the hurricane struck are something quite amazing. It has to do with public morality.” he explained.

A green puppy was born in New Orleans last week. The puppy is perfectly healthy thus far, just green. Veterinarians say this occasionally occurs when the mother’s amniotic fluid mixes with the placenta during birth, which dyes the coat of the puppy.

Freak occurrences aren’t the only way to get the your dog or cat to go green, however. You can by checking out the blog Great Green Pets, which offers myriad ideas on how to make having a pet more environmentally friendly. Recent posts include information on organic dog biscuits, dog portrait cards on recycled materials and eco-friendly cat toys.

Brad Pitt was in New Orleans on Monday to makes things just a little more right - and he wasn’t alone:

Former President Clinton and Brad Pitt met with hundreds of volunteers in the Lower 9th Ward at the site where a foundation headed by Pitt plans to begin building affordable homes for Hurricane Katrina victims.

“We hope to see a huge change here in the next six months,” Pitt told a group of residents as he posed for pictures Sunday and signed autographs.

Julian Beaver is bringing his latest 3D pavement drawings to the streets of New Orleans. This renowned British street artist has been making pavement drawings for 10 years and has worked in the U.K., Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Germany, the USA and Australia. Thanks to a grant from New Orleans’ Downtown Development District with and the J.W. Marriott Hotel, Beever was able to make a pavement drawing reflecting New Orleans’ city life. The theme for his drawing, which he calls “anamorphic illusions drawn in a special distortion in order to create an impression of 3 dimensions when seen from one particular viewpoint” was ” Louis Armstrong if I can get a likeness…If I can’t, then it’s just any musician!” Looks pretty Armstrong-like to me. But the drawing isn’t just in New Orleans or on the street. Beever sees the big picture (no pun intended):

It doesn’t worry me at all that this drawing will disappear after a couple of days in the rain, because the final product is the photograph… It’s that photograph that goes on the Internet. Then thousands of people will see it. It will be there forever. It doesn’t vanish, really. The drawing on the ground is just a vehicle.

So by checking out these non profits and blogs dedicated to revitalizing the arts in New Orleans. And here are some more amazing drawings by Beever.

And Check out more amazing illusions…

Last month’s Human Rights Watch International Film Festival featured “The Axe in the Attic,” a poignant and thoughtful documentary about both the natural and human costs of Hurricane Katrina. Filmmakers Ed Pincus and Lucia Small spent 60 days on the road exploring New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana, Alabama and Kentucky in their efforts to collect post-storm footage and interviews, but broke with documentary tradition by deciding to include themselves in the story. “When you’re two white northerners heading South,” they said in their directors’ statement, “remaining behind the camera just doesn’t feel like an option.”

The title of the film is a gloomy reference to those who sought refuge in their attics from the flood, but had to chop their way through the roof when the water failed to recede. The documentary itself focuses on how evacuees have had to adjust to their new environments, some achingly alien to them, as both subject and filmmaker take on such controversial topics as class, race, and the government’s failure to provide for those who have lost everything.
