America suffers from a collective case of do-gooder deafness: we have a hard time hearing a message when it’s delivered by a dorky academic or an unattractive activist. We’re all ears, though, when celebrities speak out about their pet causes, or their pets, or whatever. So, in acknowledgement of the fact that I, as a mere blogger, can only hope to influence so many people, I’d like to enlist the aid of some of our most oogled and Googled celebrities to help America combat climate change and overconsumption:

1. Britney Spears: Britney’s evidently on the road to recovery after some much needed r “˜n’ r. Here are three more “r’s” I’d love to see Britney promote: reduce, reuse and recycle. Our landfills are overflowing with post-consumer crap and the oceans are clogged up with plastic; what better time for Britney to redefine white trash! Recommended reading/viewing: Garbage Land by Elizabeth Royte; The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard.

Staying up till past 1am watching results come in for both the Republican and Democratic nominations in yesterday’s Super Tuesday voting, I couldn’t help but think of The West Wing. It seems to me that with the closeness in both party races, we are in for a intense few months leading up to November, proving that each vote does count and that we are still very much divided as a country.

What I enjoyed about The West Wing was how, despite one party being in the fictional White House, the show focused on the issues and often on people coming together to work to make this country better.

In that spirit, watch one of my favorite (more lighthearted) clips from The West Wing below and in the coming months remember to focus on the issues and not the mud that I suspect might be flung. And even though I posted this yesterday, if you haven’t already, please please please to register and vote!

Just last week, Minutemen founder Jim Gilchrist endorsed Mike Huckabee with this double negative praise: “We cannot just stand by and allow any candidate who wants to lead our country to not make a stand in defense of our sovereignty.”

But, in an exclusive interview with Right Wing website World Net Daily (or WND, as its friends and family call it) Gilchrist vows he will only endorse Huckabee if the canidate backs up his anti-immigration credentials with real anti-immigration policy, like his fence-buiding, amnesty-denying, alien-removing Secure America Plan. For Gilchrist, it’s really important that once once Huckabee kicks out all the aliens, they don’t get a get into North America free card: “The illegal immigrants will not be allowed back into the United States until they are legally allowed re-entry… even if that takes years… ” Not cutting line is so important to Gilchrist, that he says “”If, in fact, there is no standing in line and waiting for legal entry, I would have a serious reservation about endorsing Huckabee.” Doesn’t this bate and switch endorsement/ threat make the Minutemen Chief something Gilchrist himself would label an “Indian Giver”? Whoops!
