Mia Kirshner (of L Word fame) co-authored a uniquely beautiful and devastatingly fascinating “paper documentary” titled I Live Here. This written journey takes us through 4 crises around the world: AIDS in Malawi, globalization and feminicide in Juarez, Mexico, war in Ingushetia, Chechnya and ethnic cleansing in Burma.

This collection is like nothing I have ever seen and every time I look through, I see something new. Below are some photos of the collection and Mia Kirshner at the book signing in Los Angeles.

Necklacing– in which a rubber tire, filled with kerosene, is forced around a victim’s chest and arms and set on fire– was a common form punishment imposed by “people’s courts” Apartheid-era South Africa. The practice was first captured by the late photographer Kevin Carter. And Archbishop and peace activist Desmond Tutu once intervened to stop a man who was about to be necklaced. Tragically, nearly 20 years later, Tutu must, once again, call on South Africans to stop this brutal practice. Before the victims were suspected collaborators (with the apartheid regime) and criminals. Now refugees from Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique, who flee violence and poverty in their own countries are the victims. They are being blamed for taking jobs and driving up crime rates. 42 people have been killed, 28,000 people have been displaced by the violence and more than 400 have been arrested.

Madonna hosted a fundraising event at the United Nations in New York for both Unicef and Raising Malawi , a charity she co-founded with Michael Berg. The pop-star/actress attended the fundraiser with her 11 year old daughter, Lourdes. The event consisted of a $2,500 per head dinner plus a live auction. As for the auction bids? One guest paid $600,000 for a dance lesson with Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, while another guest paid $350,000 to hang at Yankee Stadium followed by an hour of playing football with David Beckham.

Malawi is home to over one million orphans. Raising Malawi provides immediate assistance to these orphans in through direct physical assistance programs, an orphan care center, sustainable village community programs, by providing psycho-social programs for children whose lives have been traumatized by HIV/AIDS, and by encouraging the Malawian government to support their vision in the country.
