cover_culture080414.jpgOn HuffPost today, the fabulous Jessica Wakeman questions New York Magazine’s cover for the This is New York 1968-2008 issue. Are the “cultural titans” of the big apple mostly white and mostly male?

Jessica points out that the article itself is culturally diverse:

To be fair, there’s several nice articles on the inside of the magazine extolling New York City’s imprint on film, TV and literature. In it, we see diversity that actually reflects cultural demographic reality: Susan Sontag, Toni Morrison, Spike Lee. And the intro to the whole package is about Rhoda, the Mary Tyler Moore spin-off.

She lists some of the best New York icons that didn’t make it in the magazine like Gloria Steinem, Ani di Franco, Julia Louis Dreyfus’ Elaine, Tina Fey, Yoko Ono, The Cosby Show, and the ladies of the Sex and The City. Who are your favorite New York icons?

Annie Lennox really does rock and SING! On American Idols Gives Back, The 53 (CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?) Year old Scottish former Eurythmix singer performed Many Rivers To Cross and urged people to take action around women with HIV in South Africa.

Annie’s single Sing is from her album Songs of Mass Destruction. And she teamed up with 23 singers including Madonna, Celine Dion, Gladys Knight, Faith Hill and Shakira to record the song. Annie also started the SING campaign which raises awareness and money for organizations fighting HIV in South Africa. What inspired Annie?

America suffers from a collective case of do-gooder deafness: we have a hard time hearing a message when it’s delivered by a dorky academic or an unattractive activist. We’re all ears, though, when celebrities speak out about their pet causes, or their pets, or whatever. So, in acknowledgement of the fact that I, as a mere blogger, can only hope to influence so many people, I’d like to enlist the aid of some of our most oogled and Googled celebrities to help America combat climate change and overconsumption:

1. Britney Spears: Britney’s evidently on the road to recovery after some much needed r “˜n’ r. Here are three more “r’s” I’d love to see Britney promote: reduce, reuse and recycle. Our landfills are overflowing with post-consumer crap and the oceans are clogged up with plastic; what better time for Britney to redefine white trash! Recommended reading/viewing: Garbage Land by Elizabeth Royte; The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard.

I was so busy celebrating Valentine’s Day, finding guilt-free Valentine’s Day Gifts, and awarding Valiant Valentines to social action-taking couples, I didn’t have enough time to blog about Freedom To Marry Week, the great week-long holiday that celebrates marriage for all people. Freedom To Marry is an inclusive non profit organization dedicated to ending the exclusion of same-sex couples and their families from marriage.

Do you believe that people who love each other and are committed to each other also deserve to be able to marry each other? Then ! Sign the Marriage Resolution! And watch Julie Goldman and Kate McKinnon in the music video for Julie’s song Commitment Ceremony, which is both hilarious, and inspiring. Not to apply an peer pressure, but FYI, when you sign the pledge you’ll be in good company, joining fellow pledgers like Gillian Anderson, Matthew Broderick, Bea Arthur, Beck, Neve Campbell, Alan Cumming, Ted Danson & Mary Steenburgen, Ellen DeGeneres, Laura Dern, David Duchovny, Nora Ephron & Nick Pileggi, Melissa Etheridge, Al Franken, Whoopi Goldberg,

Madonna hosted a fundraising event at the United Nations in New York for both Unicef and Raising Malawi , a charity she co-founded with Michael Berg. The pop-star/actress attended the fundraiser with her 11 year old daughter, Lourdes. The event consisted of a $2,500 per head dinner plus a live auction. As for the auction bids? One guest paid $600,000 for a dance lesson with Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, while another guest paid $350,000 to hang at Yankee Stadium followed by an hour of playing football with David Beckham.

Malawi is home to over one million orphans. Raising Malawi provides immediate assistance to these orphans in through direct physical assistance programs, an orphan care center, sustainable village community programs, by providing psycho-social programs for children whose lives have been traumatized by HIV/AIDS, and by encouraging the Malawian government to support their vision in the country. If you’d like to volunteer for or donate to Raising Malawai, here. For more on the organization, check out the video below:

Madonna paid a visit to a Mumbai shantytown today, according to the AP. The pop icon was showered with rose petals on her arrival, and spent about 45 minutes visiting with residents of the crowded slum.No word on what the trip’s about. As the AP noted, “Madonna didn’t speak to journalists, and a New York-based spokeswoman for the 49-year-old singer wasn’t immediately available for comment.”
