On HuffPost today, the fabulous Jessica Wakeman questions New York Magazine’s cover for the This is New York 1968-2008 issue. Are the “cultural titans” of the big apple mostly white and mostly male?
Jessica points out that the article itself is culturally diverse:
To be fair, there’s several nice articles on the inside of the magazine extolling New York City’s imprint on film, TV and literature. In it, we see diversity that actually reflects cultural demographic reality: Susan Sontag, Toni Morrison, Spike Lee. And the intro to the whole package is about Rhoda, the Mary Tyler Moore spin-off.
She lists some of the best New York icons that didn’t make it in the magazine like Gloria Steinem, Ani di Franco, Julia Louis Dreyfus’ Elaine, Tina Fey, Yoko Ono, The Cosby Show, and the ladies of the Sex and The City. Who are your favorite New York icons?

America suffers from a collective case of do-gooder deafness: we have a hard time hearing a message when it’s delivered by a dorky academic or an unattractive activist. We’re all ears, though, when celebrities speak out about their pet causes, or their pets, or whatever. So, in acknowledgement of the fact that I, as a mere blogger, can only hope to influence so many people, I’d like to enlist the aid of some of our most oogled and Googled celebrities to help America combat climate change and overconsumption:

I was so busy celebrating Valentine’s Day, finding guilt-free Valentine’s Day Gifts, and awarding Valiant Valentines to social action-taking couples, I didn’t have enough time to blog about Freedom To Marry Week, the great week-long holiday that celebrates marriage for all people. Freedom To Marry is an inclusive non profit organization dedicated to ending the exclusion of same-sex couples and their families from marriage.
Do you believe that people who love each other and are committed to each other also deserve to be able to marry each other? Then Read the rest of this entry »

Madonna hosted a fundraising event at the United Nations in New York for both Unicef and Raising Malawi , a charity she co-founded with Michael Berg. The pop-star/actress attended the fundraiser with her 11 year old daughter, Lourdes. The event consisted of a $2,500 per head dinner plus a live auction. As for the auction bids? One guest paid $600,000 for a dance lesson with Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, while another guest paid $350,000 to hang at Yankee Stadium followed by an hour of playing football with David Beckham.
Malawi is home to over one million orphans. Raising Malawi provides immediate assistance to these orphans in through direct physical assistance programs, an orphan care center, sustainable village community programs, by providing psycho-social programs for children whose lives have been traumatized by HIV/AIDS, and by encouraging the Malawian government to support their vision in the country. If you’d like to volunteer for or donate to Raising Malawai,
