I don’t watch a ton of TV (I only have an antenna), but the one show I actually watch when it’s on (instead of online or on DVDs) is Lost!

I have to say that’s it kind of funny that a show that started based on the premise of escaping an Island is now about how to get back on said Island.   Oh well, it’s all in good fun As long as they don’t kill Sayid!

Emmy Nominations Kick “The Wire” to the Curb

The Emmy Nominations for the 2008 season are here. I’m not a big TV watcher, with the exception of The Wire and Lost, but it’s always interesting to consider the nominations and this year is no exception. The complete nomination list can be found here but after looking at it, it has become obvious to me that I should focus on a glaring omission:

1) THE WIRE

I’m sorry, but it is unacceptable that this show not be nominated and even more unacceptable that none of it’s actors be nominated. I mean really, does William Shatner really deserve another nomination for Boston Legal? Not when Andre Royo, Michael K Williams and Lance Reddick are without one.

I’m not sure how anyone who spent 5 minutes with Royo’s Bubbles could NOT nominate him… He is the definition of best supporting actor and did more work in one episode than William Shatner has done in his entire Boston Legal career. And as much as I love Lost and love Michael Emerson’s Ben, I would easily chop his name of the nomination list for Royo, Williams, Reddick or any number of their co-stars.

I’m a Lost junkie - I have to admit it. The addictive show about the mysterious “Island” is a great guilty pleasure, full of suspense and pretty great characters. One of those characters has been played by Dominic Monaghan and during his time in Hawaii, where the show films, he has taken advantage of his surroundings in between takes on Lost and other projects:

The amateur photographer is opening up an exhibit today in Los Angeles of photographs taken over the past few years. Happy Accidents, which runs from March 13 through the 27th at the Hamilton-Selway Fine Art Gallery in West Hollywood, includes some interesting shots from Dominic’s stay on the island, like the one of J.J. Abrams producer’s chair cheekily called, “JJ Office”. [WIRED]

Jason Castro sang Hallelujah on Tuesday’s American Idol, which made Simon, a fan of Jeff Buckley’s cover of the song, a very happy judge. But the irony of the Hallelujah’s American Idol-level popularity is that when Canadian singer songwriter Leonard Cohen first recorded the song in 1984 on his Various Positions album, Columbia records opted not to release the record because, at this point, Cohen was not as popular as he once was in America. But Cohen remained popular in Europe and in his native Canada. And Hallelujah wound up being one of his most popular songs ever. It was covered by artists including Rufus Wainwright, Bob Dylan, Regina Spektor, Bono, K.D. Lang, Sheryl Crow, John Cale to name just a few. But it was the late Jeff Buckley’s cover which became the most well known, and was ranked #259 on Rolling Stone’s “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” and dubbed “the most perfect song ever” by Q Magazine.

After months of being on strike, the WGA (Writers Guild of America) has voted to lift the strike and will begin writing again. After unofficial talks and scheduled votes today, the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) and the WGA have come to terms officially, with some writers returning to work as soon as tomorrow:

The vote on whether to lift the strike was held three days after the Writers Guild of America cinched its contract agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The strike vote was held over a 48-hour frame, with members able to vote in person at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills and Gotham’s Crowne Plaza Hotel, or via fax.

As is the case with many things, the publics focus on the Writer’s Strike has worn off. While they made headlines in the beginning - now we are only reminded that they are on strike when we turn on our television only to find American Gladiators or some Dancing with the Stars like show. (The exception being the premiere of Lost tonight - yay!)

But the unfortunate news that some striking WGA members may be at rich to lose their benefits may bring them back into the news.

About 250 WGA members will lose their eligibility April 1 because they did not meet the plan’s 12-month earnings threshold of $30,823 as of Dec. 31. That’s about 40% higher than the usual number
