Oh, hellooooo. We’ve discussed that perhaps sometimes Harrison Ford goes a tad overboard on ways he raises environmental awareness, so it’s a little refreshing that this time around, his activism is taking the form of sitting in front of a camera and answering questions.

The website Big Think has a multi-part interview with Ford, asking questions that range from “Is Indiana Jones an environmental hero?” to “How has your love of nature informed your acting?” But the most interesting answer, I think, comes from the question, “Can we live green and also live well?” To that Ford answers, in fact, we have to live green to live well. As he continues, Ford hits on a very important point regarding our depletion of the earth’s resources

Top 10 Ways Indiana Jones Saved the World : #4 (find 1, 2 and 3)

4) By helping us all realize that Knowledge is Power! in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
The message of the latest Indy film is that knowledge is the most important thing there is - that learning can make life worth living! Woah, that’s pretty awesome. I can’t remember the last time a film (that wasn’t an after school special) had that message. Just thinking about learning gets me excited. I won’t go into more detail about how knowledge and the Crystal Skull actually work together in the film (in case you didn’t see it) but even with cheesy props. the message is pretty awesome.(find 1,2 and 3)

Top 10 Ways Indiana Jones Saved the World : #3 (find #1 and #2 here)

3) Meeting Karen Allen’s Marion Ravenwood

OK, again this may not have “saved the world” but Marion Ravenwood is amazing, and I would argue the most amazing thing in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. As many big blockbuster Hollywood pictures continue to degrade women and proliferate stereotypes, the latest Indiana Jones gave us a woman (an older one at that!) who didn’t put up with Indy’s crap and was tough enough to fight on her own most of the time. Her spirit lights up the screen and illustrates how women should be portrayed more often.

Here’s an interview with Allen:

I wonder why he's grimacing. You know how sometimes, you have so many things to say about something, you’re actually rendered speechless?  This is one of those times.   Because, you see, to highlight the “pain involved in deforestation,” Harrison Ford went ahead and had his chest waxed.   On Access Hollywood.   With a Spice Girl there to document.   Obviously.   The 65(!)-year old is a dedicated environmentalist, having worked with the group Conservation International for fifteen years.   His hope is that this action shocks people into thinking green.   Which I suppose is a totally logical leap in logic.
