Now that Thanksgiving is over, we’ve finally moved into the “ho ho ho” shopping season. I’ve noticed that most of the stores in Los Angeles are dressed up for this uber-important time of year. Most are adorned with pine garlands and piles of fake snow while their doors are guarded by twinkling holiday trees, imported from far beyond the deserts of Southern California.  It’s bizarre; these “authentic” SHOP NOW! decorations are expected to lure both willing and unwilling Americans into helping these companies profit margins during their most critical time of year by patronizing their businesses.

I’m all for helping our dismal economy from falling further into the red but I would also like to offer some suggestions for alternative holiday gifts. These 10 gifts from organizations we work with, are a sustainable alternative to the traditional shopping model and will make a positive difference in many people’s lives.

1.Say no to plastic water bottles and say yes to plentiful, free tap water. Food and Water Watch offers Kleen Kanteen’s stainless steel water bottle, decorated with the organization’s “Take Back the Tap” logo, for all of your drinking needs. As the proud owner of one, I can attest to the usefulness of this bottle and the water tastes great!

2. Who can say no to chocolate?  I certainly have a hard time resisting it, especially when all of its proceeds go to HELP USA, which provides transitional and permanent housing for homeless individuals nationwide.  Your chocolate gift will be more than delicious; it will enrich many people’s lives.

3. Jewish World Watch’s Solar Cooker program has saved thousands of women’s lives in Darfur. The program provides an alternative cooking source so that they do not have to venture from the safety of their homes to collect firewood under threat from the Janjaweed, which has raped and assaulted thousands of women.  If you purchase t-shirts and hats, the proceeds will provide solar cookers to Darfurian women.

4. Many parents innocently give their children a new pet as a holiday gift without realizing that this animal might have come from a puppy mill or an irresponsible breeder. The best place to get either a pure-bred or mutt is from your local animal shelter.

5. Many of us need to loosen our belts after the marathon holiday eating season finishes on January 1st. One way to do this is to incorporate more nutritious foods into your diet now and to send healthy gifts rather than gingerbread men or peppermint bark. The Eat Well Guide offers tips on finding local produce to help jump start your healthy eating and to you to share as gifts with friends and family.  And, deliver your local produce gift in an attractive, reusable Slow Food USA canvas bag.

6. Share inspiring stories about human rights. Amnesty International’s comprehensive online shop has several fascinating and visually stunning human rights books. You can also find great apparel, calendars, music and jewelry on their site.

7. Need a bookmark for your Amnesty book? Consider purchasing one from NARSAD Artworks, which produces bookmarks, note cards and posters by individuals with mental illness. The proceeds support NARSAD’s mental health research.

8. Sending flowers?  Choose flowers from California Organics and a percentage of your purchase will support the Pesticide Action Network of North America, a leader in raising awareness about the harmful effects of pesticides and advocate replacing them with ecologically sound alternatives.

9. Support our troops!  By purchasing a shirt from the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America organization, you will be helping the lives of millions of veterans nationwide. This group was a key force in the passage of the new GI bill this year and continues to provide leadership in the ongoing fight for better veterans benefits.

10.  Support the United Farm Workers and drink delicious Napa Valley wine. Black Eagle Wines, named after the union’s icon, are produced under a contract with the United Farm Workers, ensuring workers are given fair pay and benefits.  You can enjoy a glass of Merlot and know that workers produced this wine under fair labor conditions.

11. This list isn’t finished! takepart today and share with other readers a creative gift from your favorite non-profit organization by simply clicking on the “comment” button at the top.

What the F**K (excuse my language) is social media? If this is a question you’ve ever asked yourself or simply something you want to learn more about you should definitely check out the awesome slideshow below. It is full of amazing facts, figures and graphics to help you see how important this thing we call social media is:

Be sure to takepart and see how one great group, IAVA is using social networking (and media!) with their new Communityofveterans.org!

It’s been a Justin Timberlake kind of a week. I saw JT at Keep A Child Alive’s Black Ball, he was on SNL and I’ve been watching this clip over and over:

I know, I know, what does this have to do with anything? Nothing much, except that I can’t get it out of my head and I thought maybe posting it would get it out of my system!

Also, it gives me a chance to plug IAVA - Irag and Afghanistan Veterans of America - because he clip is from Southland Tales and in the film JT plays an Iraqi war vet!  So, watch the clip above a few times (it’s addicting) and then takepart with IAVA!

As Veteran’s Day comes to a close I want to give another shout out to the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of American (IAVA), whom Sarah mentioned earlier, and the tremendously important help they provide returning troops.  Paul Rieckhoff, founder and executive director of IAVA, was on the Rachel Maddow Show tonight talking about Community of Veterans, an online community for veterans to help make the transition to civilian life.  Here’s their latest PSA that highlights the isolation many veterans feel upon returning from war:

Pearl Harbor Survivor Houston James Embraces Global War On Terrorism Survivor SSgt Graunke During the Dallas Veterans Day Parade.

With the excitement around the election clashing against our economic mess, it’s easy to forget that there are other major pressing issues in our country, including the needs of the thousands of veterans from our current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Today is Veterans Day and it’s an opportunity for renewed focus on the ongoing needs of our military men and women who serve our country. We’ve been working with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of American (IAVA) for nearly a year now as one of the lead campaign organizations for the Social Action campaign for our film, Charlie Wilson’s War (now available on DVD).  IAVA led the fight for the successful passage of the new GI Bill earlier this year and the group continues to fight for better veterans benefits.  Takepart on Veterans Day by supporting IAVA’s efforts to ensure that returning veterans are given their full enlistment bonuses.

In addition to IAVA, HELP USA is providing critical social, medical, educational and psychological services to homeless veterans at 28 sites across the country. HELP USA needs your support to expand their services to veterans. Takepart by learning how you can get involved today.

Last, you can publicly express your support for our veterans by attending a Veterans Day event near you. Takepart by finding an event now. The sacrifices our veterans have made for our nation are tremendous; we can do our part support them and their families.

A few weeks ago I posted a list of my top 5 war films and in honor of Veterans Day I’m expanding that list to make a list of the Top 10 War Films. Some are pro-war, many anti, some look at the details of being in war, a few deal with the aftermath or those on the periphery of the fight - but all of them capture a different aspect of what being at war means.

Let me know if I missed your favorite and be sure to takepart with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America this Veterans day.

10.  La France - Strange and beautiful, full of music and life and quiet and death.  There is no other war film quite like it.

Congratulations on your victory. Both you and Senator McCain are true patriots, and you each ran a remarkable campaign. While I’m sure you’re relieved that the election is over, now is the time to bring all Americans together, get to work, and focus on the next four years of governing.
We look forward to working with you and the new Congress to support Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families.

Babies, kids and veterans are coddled, kissed, saluted and spoken about with more upbeat language than any other demographic during a political election. Criticizing veterans would be political suicide for any candidate. So, it’s easy for Mr. So-Called-Maverick John McCain to claim that as a veteran, his support is unwavering. However, those are merely words and although John McCain fancies himself as the Straight-talk-Express, he is a politician. So, can you believe him? I’d argue NO. His actions do not back up his rhetoric. How do I know this? Because the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (a non-partisan non-profit organization dedicated to helping returning vets which led the fight for the successful passage of the new GI bill) issued their 2008 Congressional report card which rates all members on veterans affairs. John McCain received a D from IAVA. Yes, he has failed our veterans.

takepart Check out the report card and hold your senators and representatives accountable to supporting veterans’ benefits and rights.

The line between fact and fiction appears to be a small one in Full Battle Rattle. The story revolves around a fake town, where a real war is simulated. I can’t wait to see it. Perhaps watching a virtual Iraq will help people to remember that the real one is still out there and very real people are experiencing very real deaths.
