TomDispatch is a site I love to read and often times I blog about the various pieces and books featured on the site. I was very excited to see that Tom has a new book out, The World According to TomDispatch: America in the New Age of Empire. It’s a best of collection that focuses on “the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the U.S. offshore Bermuda Triangle of injustice from Guantamano to the CIA “black sites,” not to speak of extraordinary rendition, the response to Hurricane Katrina, global warming, Iraq’s black gold and the energy crisis, and, above all, the Bush administration’s misbegotten “smash of civilizations.”

But don’t take my word that it is worth reading, here’s what Howard Zinn had to say:

“TomDispatch is one of the wonders of the electronic age. A touch of the finger and you get the juiciest, meatiest information and analysis, so rich a feast of intelligence and insight I often felt short of breath. Now, Tom Engelhardt has assembled some of the best of his dispatches, from some of the boldest and most astute commentators in the country. So take a deep breath and read.” [TD]

And in case you’re a watcher and not a reader you can watch a video of Tom himself talking about the book by clicking here >>

May Day was first celebrated in the U.S. when, in 1886, 300,000 workers walked off their jobs to demand an eight hour workday. You may not know that because while many countries officially recognize the holiday, and almost all countries celebrate it, the U.S. spends May first celebrating Loyalty Day, and National Day of Prayer. Church State non-separation and blind patriotism are a lot more palatable than workers’ rights, humane working conditions, an eight hour work day and other radical notions.
So I say, viewers of the world, UNITE! Celebrate May Day by watching great movies about the workers’ movement. Here are the top 10 May Day movies.

1. Bread and Roses (2000) directed by Ken Loach and starring Pilar Padilla, Adrien Brody, Elpidia Carrillo, Jack McGee, is the story about an undocumented woman from Mexico who becomes involved in a campaign to unionize the janitors in a sleek Los Angeles high-rise.

Howard Zinn, United States historian, author and social critic, is fairly well known in many circles, but there are still many who are unaware of his ideas. In an effort to discuss the United States specifically post 9/11 and reach an audience that is more likely to seek out YouTube videos or graphic novels rather than traditional reading materials, Zinn has changed things things up a bit. His latest offering is called “A People’s History of American Empire” and expresses ideas through images and characters rather than text.

Below is a great animated video made from an excerpt of that new graphic novel. The video, entitled “Empire or Humanity? What the Classroom Didn’t Teach Me about the American Empire,” is narrated by Viggo Mortensen and taken from an essay Zinn wrote that’s available on Tomdispatch.com. (To read the unabridged essay “Empire or Humanity?” go to Tomdispatch.com.)
