Some homosexual in California are using the occasion of their impending weddings to fight a bill that would invalidate same-sex marriages in the state.

From the A.P.:

Molly McKay plans to marry her partner on Sept. 1, and the two have decided to participate in one of the more popular anti-Proposition 8 wedding trends — replacing a traditional gift registry with a political version that accepts donations to the “No on 8″ campaign in lieu of gifts.

The State of California began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples starting at 5pm PST today. Influential liberal mayors Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles and Gavin Newsom of California are both presiding over ceremonies at their respective city halls that began today at 5pm PST. Neither Mr. Newsom nor Mr. Villaraigosa have stellar records when it comes to marriage, but kudos to them on their efforts to support equal marriage rights for all. This is the first time the state will have same-sex unions since a brief stint in 2004 wherein the County of San Francisco began granting marriage licenses (they were later revoked then unrevoked then revoked and so on and so forth).

So far, the event has drawn little news coverage - probably due to the overwhelming interest in Tiger Wood’s stunning victory at the PGA US Open at Torrey Pines - but surely conservative pundits will be frothy mouthed within the next day or so.

Portia de Rossi and Ellen Degeneris came out of the closet with their wedding plans! Thanks to the California State Supreme Court’s Decision overturning the ban on gay marriage (as unconstitutional) Ellen and Portia can finally say “I do. This, of course, is one small step towards equality for humankind. And one gigantic leap towards a wedding registry this couple. Yesterday, on her show, an emotional Ellen announced:

This is very exciting, I have to say. Yesterday, the California Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage. So I would like to say right now, for the first time, I am announcing that I am getting married. [...] I’m so excited. It’s something that we’ve, of course, wanted to do, and we’ve wanted to be legal, and we’re very very excited.

The lucky gal, of course, is Ellen’s girlfriend Portia de Rossi. Check out the video below

California’s Gay Marriage Ban was banned today by the California Supreme court! In the 4-3 decision, the court ruled that Proposition 22, a ban on gay marriage, is unconstitutional. This is great news for people who, you know, like, care about equal rights or whatever! Here’s why the court deemed it unconstitutional to tell people who they can and can’t marry:

In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual’s capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual’s sexual orientation, and, more generally, that an individual’s sexual orientation — like a person’s race or gender — does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights. We therefore conclude that in view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples.

Sex And The City star Cynthia Nixon came out about her “fantastic” four-year long relationship with education activist Christine Marinoni, at a press junket promoting the “coming out” of the Sex And The City movie. Nixon’s love for Christine seems pretty unconditional: “I’m in love with [Christine] because she’s her.” And their relationship seems very democratic and healthy: “We shop and cook and raise children [Samantha, 11, and Charles, 6.]- we both pitch in.” The Emmy and Tony award-winning actress also shared the importance of positive gay role models. When Nixon came out, her children “were fine” because they have a gay uncle and lesbian godmothers.

When Freeheld won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short, it was more than just a win for the filmmakers, Cynthia Wade and Vanessa Roth. It was a victory for same sex couples everywhere who face discrimination and are told they cannot take care of the people they love. And it was a victory made possible by someone who wasn’t around t celebrate it: the woman whose life, love and struggle for justice is the subject of the documentary. When Laurel Hester, a 50 year police Lieutenant who had been on the force for 25 years, was diagnosed with cancer she knew she would have to fight for her life. What she didn’t know was that she would have to fight for her partner’s security, for her pension and for basic fairness and decency.

I was so busy celebrating Valentine’s Day, finding guilt-free Valentine’s Day Gifts, and awarding Valiant Valentines to social action-taking couples, I didn’t have enough time to blog about Freedom To Marry Week, the great week-long holiday that celebrates marriage for all people. Freedom To Marry is an inclusive non profit organization dedicated to ending the exclusion of same-sex couples and their families from marriage.

Do you believe that people who love each other and are committed to each other also deserve to be able to marry each other? Then ! Sign the Marriage Resolution! And watch Julie Goldman and Kate McKinnon in the music video for Julie’s song Commitment Ceremony, which is both hilarious, and inspiring. Not to apply an peer pressure, but FYI, when you sign the pledge you’ll be in good company, joining fellow pledgers like Gillian Anderson, Matthew Broderick, Bea Arthur, Beck, Neve Campbell, Alan Cumming, Ted Danson & Mary Steenburgen, Ellen DeGeneres, Laura Dern, David Duchovny, Nora Ephron & Nick Pileggi, Melissa Etheridge, Al Franken, Whoopi Goldberg,
