Feministing commented on the new anti-female genital mutilation campaign by the Association of Women against Genital Mutilation (AMAM). The ad copy reads: “More than 140 million women in the world are condemned to feel nothing” and features the image here of a blow-up doll. Feministing had this to say about the ad:

I’m all for raising awareness about FGM, but this campaign really rubs the wrong way. It reduces women to their body parts and the issue to just a sexual one. Using a blowup doll to depict a woman who has undergone FGM is incredibly offensive - they’re literally being portrayed as no longer human, just a sex toy.

I also was disgusted by the show Bulging Brides but it wasn’t until Feministing.com posted this piece that I realized I wasn’t alone in my discomfort. Bulging Brides is a classy program where women buy wedding dresses two sizes too small and then kill themselves to fit into those tiny frocks. Check out this clip:

The shows tag-line is “the perfect day is still pounds away.” First of all, there is no such thing as a perfect day or a perfect body. Secondly, shouldn’t happiness on your wedding day come from the actual marriage and not from the size of your wedding dress?

A judge Down Under is down right shameful.

According to the Guardian Unlimited “A judge in Australia was facing calls to step down today after she failed to jail a group of nine males who admitted gang-raping a 10-year-old girl in an Aboriginal community, saying the young victim “probably agreed” to have sex with them.

Instead of jailing the three adults, aged 17 to 26, one of whom was a repeat sex offender, and giving custodial sentences to the six juveniles aged 14 to 16, Queensland District Court judge Sarah Bradley handed out suspended sentences and probation orders.”

And in case you missed it, the judge is a she!
