Fuel, and what fuel to use, has been the issue of the day for quite a few days now. With campaign ads about rising gas prices and offshore drilling plus new debates over whether biofuels are good because they help the environment or bad because they take food away from people, new solutions are no doubt in need.

Over at The Nation, Frances Cerra Whittelsey has an idea, one that I think is swell - people should eat less meat! It all comes down to one simple fact:

While there are daily references in the media to the diversion of corn to fuel-making, there’s hardly ever a mention of the fact that feeding our livestock uses 50 percent to 60 percent of the American corn crop. [The Nation]

More than that, the meat industry plays a pretty big role in global warming:

The shocking fact is that production of beef, pork and poultry is a bigger part of the climate problem than the cars and trucks we drive, indeed of the whole transportation sector. [The Nation]

(this is inst so much inconvenient as it is hilarious but since it is Friday, why not lighten things up a bit?!)

EARTH—Former vice president Al Gore—who for the past three decades has unsuccessfully attempted to warn humanity of the coming destruction of our planet, only to be mocked and derided by the very people he has tried to save—launched his infant son into space Monday in the faint hope that his only child would reach the safety of another world.

Washing machines use a ton of energy, but did you know that 90% of that energy goes into heating the water? Forget the warm and hot wash cycles, and instead keep the dial on cold and rub a little eco-friendly detergent on those harder-to-clean stains. Not only are you saving the environment, but using less energy means a lower electric bill at the end of the month. Who could argue with that?! Watch how excited Hayden Panettiere gets over her cold wash in the clip from “Shanghai Kiss” below:

This is called I decided not to write about this before the Fourth of July as to not be a buzzkill, but now that the festivities are over I’d like to point you in the direction of this article from the Los Angeles Times that discusses how awful for the environment fireworks are. Turns out the answer is “really bad.” In fact,

Throughout the Los Angeles region, concentrations of fine particles, or carbon soot, skyrocket for up to 24 hours after the Independence Day shows, reaching levels as high as those from wildfires…

Also, traces of poisonous metals, which give fireworks their bright colors, and perchlorate, a hormone-altering substance used as an oxidizer, trickle to the ground, contaminating waterways.

This is a tree.In a civic event meant to symbolize Mexico’s attempt to undo some of the environmental damage it has done through excessive pollution, Mexicans went out this past Saturday and planted over eight million trees all over the country.

During an event celebrating the plantings, President Felipe Calderon stated, “We are repairing just a little of the enormous damage that we are doing” to the environment.” Though Greenpeace has been quoted as calling the day nothing more than a publicity stunt, the Mexican government is trying to use the event as an awareness-raising campaign for its citizens.
