Mother earth called, and she isn’t happy.

A 6.0 earthquake rattled a western Chinese region today. One person was killed and 23 injured.  The quake struck a few hours after the Olympic torch passed through and hit the same region devastated by the May 12th 7.9 quake that killed over 69,000 people.

A powerful storm tore through Chicago yesterday. Wrigley Field was evacuated and tornado sirens echoed through the downtown area

An earthquake rattled Los Angeles at 11:42 am today. And it most certainly rattled me. This was my first earthquake and a 5.4 on the Richter scale is about as shaky as i ever want to experience.

Since the earthquake shook Hollywood, here are our 10 favorite films featuring a quake. (Hat tip to Blair for all of his help!)

1) Superman (1978)

2) Earthquake

3) A View to a Kill

4) Knocked Up

Trivia: According to the DVD commentary, Jay Baruchel made a deal with director Judd Apatow that he would be the naked guy in the earthquake scene if he didn’t have to ride the rollarcoaster, because of his fear. Apatow of course broke this by making Baruchel ride, so the part of the naked guy went to ‘Jason Segal.”

Earthquake damageSome Iceland News for you - a magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook the town of Selfoss Iceland, about 30 miles east of the capital Reykjavik Iceland. As of writing this no one had been reported killed, but there were plenty of injuries and material loss. The most harrowing story came from a hospital in Selfoss near the epicenter where a hospital was damaged and in danger of collapsing. Patients were being evacuated.

It’s been an extremely difficult month for rescue workers and foreign aid organizations due to the plethora of natural disasters. The disasters are even coming in opposition now - an earthquake in Iceland near the poles and Tropical Storm Alma forming on the same day. The disastrous earthquake that struck Central China last week buried 32 sources of radiation according to the Xinhua state media network. According to a French nuclear expert the radioactive sources most likely came from hospitals, factories and research facilities and not from weapons.

The Chinese Government had previously stated that all nuclear facilities in danger of being affected by the May 12th quake were safe and under control. Now Xinhua says that all but two had been recovered, and that those remaining had been cordoned off and would be soon transported to a safe location

Central China was hit with a devastating earthquake today measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale. The quake is the worst to strike the world’s most populous country in decades. The state-run Xinhua News Agency currently estimates over 8,500 people have perished as a result of the disaster, tragically including 900 students who were trapped under the rubble of their collapsed school.

The epicenter of the quake was in Sichuan province, in the hilly region of the Middle Kingdom leading up to the Tibetan plateau, but its force caused skyscrapers in Shanghai and Taipei to sway. The shockwaves were felt as far away as Thailand and Vietnam. You can view video of the quake shot by a student in Sichuan province after the jump:
