UK Residents waste $20 Billion worth of food every year, The Guardian reports. A new British Government study on waste has found that Britons are simply throwing away $20 Billion worth of food that could have been eaten. If you’ve sampled certain British cuisine, this might not come as much of a surprise, but the negative effect this enormous amount of waste has on the environment is no joke.

Approximately $12 Billion of the total comes from food that is bought but never touched. Britons simply toss out 13 million unopened yogurt containers, 5,500 untouched chickens and 440,000 un-nuked TV Dinners each year. The rest of the $20 Billion comes from excess food which is prepared to eat but never consumed because the amount was misjudged and the extra is never eaten as leftovers.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s commute via private jet between his mansion in Los Angeles and the state capitol in Sacramento may soon be coming to an end. The city of Santa Monica voted this past March 25th to ban large jets from the municipal airport the Governor has been using for his commute. But apparently the city resolution hasn’t been enough to deter Schwarzengger’s and others planes from continuing to use the airport, so the matter will be sent before a Federal Judge in a court case scheduled to begin May 15th.

Schwarzenegger’s brother-in-law, Bobby Shriver, a Santa Monica city councilman who was one of the unanimous votes for the resolution said, “These guys aren’t listening so we have to lift the conversation to a different level”.

Patagonia is taking a step beyond in informing its customers about the carbon footprint of their products. The outdoor wear manufacturer has launched The Footprint Chronicles, a new interactive web application that gives consumers a detailed, step-by-step analysis of the production processes involved in their products and the resulting environmental impact.

We learn a Patagonia Eco Rainshell Jacket, for example, is designed in Ventura, California, then the fabric manufacture is done in Matsuyama, Japan. From there the product is shipped to Hanoi, Vietnam for sewing and then gets shipped across the Pacific to Reno, Nevada for distribution in the United States. The production process involves over 14,000 miles of travel, 15 pounds of CO2 emissions, 5 ounces of wate and 18 kwh of energy consumption. The site also gives Patagonia’s impressions of the positives and negatives of the process and asks for user’s ideas on how to improve upon it.

Naysayers be forewarned - your top 10 global warming myths are about to be debunked! Climate change and global warming are anything BUT simple concepts, with tons of different factors interacting and influencing one another. One thing that we (or at least most of us) can agree upon is that the world is getting warmer due to human action, and there will be serious consequences if we don’t do something about it soon.

Whether your still a global warming skeptic, or you’re a believer who is still left a bit perplexed by certain claims - for instance, why IS Antarctica getting colder, and what’s 10 degrees here or there to someone living in Norway? - fear not! New Scientist online has examined some of the most prevalent global warming myths, and turned them on their heads with scientific evidence to the contrary. Check our our Top 10 favorites here!
