Sadly, the US Supreme Court this morning refused to consider the case of Troy Davis, the man sitting on Georgia’s Death Row for nearly 20 years. This was the last opportunity for a retrial to prevent his execution. Worldwide support for Davis comes from people such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter and Congressman John Lewis.

Help prevent a monumental injustice. The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles still has the opportunity to stop his execution! takepart and call on the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to reconsider its previous decision and grant clemency to Troy Davis.

James Byrd Jr., a black man, was a 49 when three white men beat him, chained him by the ankles to the bumper of a pickup truck, and dragged down three-miles of country road in Jasper Texas. Byrd’s head, limbs, dentures and wallet were found along the road where Byrd was tortured, dismembered and killed. That was 10 years ago. Today, this unspeakable episode of racism and hatred continues to haunt the town of Jasper. And yet, out of this “modern day lynching” reconciliation and healing has occurred, thanks to the Byrd family. Days after his son was killed, then 73-year-old James Byrd Sr. announced “We may be hurting, but we’re not hating.” To prove that they were choosing healing over hating, the family created the James Byrd Jr. Foundation for Racial Healing, which conducts diversity workshops, awards scholarships to students of color and helped pass a hate crime bill in Texas. The foundation also runs an oral history project which has collected over 2,600 people’s experiences of racism.

Yet these 5 couples have it all: they are able to love more than one person without causing the broken hearts and dishes that often accompany polyamorous relationships. What’s their trick? They love each other AND the planet, human rights, and civil rights, and they take action to make the world a better place together. Because these lovebirds bring so much love to each other and the world, because their heart-felt hard work has won my heart, I’d like to give them a Valiant Valentine Award (VVA).

Today’s Valiant Valentine, which kicks off my 5-part Valentine’s week-long series, goes to a couple who has already received a few awards here and there, though none as prestigious as the VVA. She’s a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador who scored Academy Awards, and awards from Amnesty International and The Center for Constitutional Rights. He’s no small potatoes either, having won his own Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Best actor “Prix” at Cannes.
