While it wouldn’t have surprised me to find out that Sarah Palin was actually unclear about Africa being a continent, part of me had a feeling that the comments were taken out of context or trumped up by a bitter aide.  As it turns out, the comments were part of an elaborate hoax, which fooled Fox, MSNBC and much of the blogosphere. The “leak” came from Martin Eisenstadt, a fabricated McCain policy adviser,  who, in video reports, was played by one of the two filmmakers that began the ruse. Here’s one of their videos:

I think a part of us really wanted to believe the gaffes, as frightening as they may have been for a now-former vice presidential candidate.  I’m impressed by how influential their hoax became, which reveals the need for us readers (and bloggers) to be more vigilant about where we get our news.

I’m a pretty happy TakePart blogger these days. Not only does Participant Productions have an awesome movie in theaters (Tom McCarthy’s The Visitor) and another one on the way (Errol Morris’ Standard Operating Procedure) but great interviews with the directors and actors keep popping up all over the blogosphere.

Here are some of the pieces I spotted yesterday:

THE VISITORThe Evening Class Interview With Richard Jenkins (The Evening Class)

So it’s April 1st and one way I am celebrating this prank filled holiday is by participating in Lucid Screening’s White Elephant Blogathon. The idea is that folks send in a film they would normally never watch, or that they deem silly or bad. Then everyone who sent in a film gets a one of the submissions sent back to them and they have to review it for April Fools day.

It’s a pretty fun event and more than that speaks to the community that the blogosphere can provide for joint creative ventures. Also, more than simply being appropriate for the holiday, writing about bad films can also indirectly make us all realize how important good films, films with actual messages really are!
