I’ve just finished Truman Capote’s The Grass Harp. The story was a speedy read but my heart now feels the same way my stomach does when I’ve eaten too much desert. I’m having to take slow, deep breathes.

Why are tales set in small southern towns distinct in the mouth-watering flavor of honeyed sadness they leave behind? I’m sure there is plenty of commentary in scholarly journals devoted to deconstructing the cultural, sociological, and historical underpinnings of what some lit-wag has likely tagged “shoofly pie” narrative resonance or some such thing. BOLLOCKS, I say, preferring simply to savor the effect and idle away a respectable amount of time before tucking in again.

So, while I’m waiting, let me share what I’m still tasting.

Capote’s Judge Charlie Cook is one of a sundry band of oddballs who take up temporary residence in a China tree in the woods. The Judge muses to his fellow misfits as he catches a wind-blown leaf and presses it to his cheek:

A leaf, a handful of seed – begin with these, learn a little what it is to love. First, a leaf, a fall of rain, then someone to receive what a leaf has taught you, what a fall of rain has ripened…love is a chain of love, as nature is a chain of life.

Now, first let that sink in. Go ahead, it’s ok to reread . Have you ever said or heard it said that “timing is everything in relationships?” This idea of progression though — the continuous carrying forth of love’s lessons and blessings — that’s way groovy, ideally, at least.

This is the only time Sarah Palin has helped me relax

Now if only there was any mention of the arts on the McCain/Plain website.   (Obama and Biden have a two page downloadable arts section/plan).

In fact, takepart and read about that plan and think about how often the arts make you happy and factor into your life (are you listening to music now?, perhaps watching a video?, maybe you’re going to the movies tonight or a play tomorrow?).

Itching to see a good documentary for free? Check out POV tonight, PBS’s point of view documentary series. The film tonight looks to be awesome - it’s called Campaign and it deals with Japanese electoral politics and offers an inside view into how the system works:

Filmmaker Magazine has released their list of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” The list is always an interesting read and as a filmmaker, I find it be motivation to get working on my own projects.

But what made the list totally awesome this year was the inclusion of the great Jesse Epstein! Jesse’s work mainly deals with body image and perceptions of beauty - a subject that definitely needs more discussion. Her film Wet Dreams and False Images takes us inside a barber shop where the patrons admire glossy pictures of famous women in little clothing and then to an airbrushing studio where we learn the truth about the ladies in the pictures.

One of my personal favorites, The Guarantee, is a hand drawn, animated story of a male dancer who is forced to make a decision regarding his nose and plastic surgery. It’s funny, poignant and the pacing is such that you have time to think about the issue at hand whilst simultaneously being entertained.

Another thing that makes Jesse super cool is that she works for Shooting People, an awesome group that works to connect and help promote independent filmmakers and their work! (You can even watch the film Wendy and I made with Meerkat Media on their site :

When American University’s Center For Social Media released the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video they went one step further and actually made a video themselves!

The video celebrates the evolution of video mashups/remixes with some of the most famous examples of how folks incorporate copyrighted material into their work:

I personally love The Shining trailer and the Bush/Blair romance.

Is it any coincidence that Dr. Edgar Mitchell’s claim that there are aliens in space comes 1 day before the new X-Files movie opens???

I wonder… Maybe this fan video (with super cool Blink 182 music) says it all:

More on Mitchell after the jump

If you’re in NYC today (and tomorrow) you should stop by New York International Latino Film Festival and catch a film. One that I recommend seeing is called La Americana. It’s a simple, moving portrait of a women caught between the realities of being an illegal immigrant and the love she feels for her family.
