Jellyfish look peaceful and beautiful as they glide through the water. Unless of course they touch you and release their venom instantly onto your skin. Not a great day at the beach, that’s for sure.

The New York Times reports that jellyfish are becoming more numerous and more widespread, and they are showing up in places where they have rarely been seen before. And not only are they a pest for beach-goers and fisherman but their growing population is an alarming sign of our ocean’s health.

(this is inst so much inconvenient as it is hilarious but since it is Friday, why not lighten things up a bit?!)

EARTH—Former vice president Al Gore—who for the past three decades has unsuccessfully attempted to warn humanity of the coming destruction of our planet, only to be mocked and derided by the very people he has tried to save—launched his infant son into space Monday in the faint hope that his only child would reach the safety of another world.

A chuck of ice measuring 7 square miles broke off a Canadian ice shelf in the arctic yesterday. The sheet broke away from the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf off the north coast of Ellesmere Island in Canada’s far north.

Derek Mueller, a polar scientist and research fellow at Trent University explained that a crack in the shelf was first spotted in 2002. This is the biggest chunk of ice to break away from one of Canada’s six ice shelves since the Ayles shelf broke loose in 2005.

“Ice shelves don’t just break up. There’s no karate chop,” he said. “This is the result of a gradual weakening over time as a result of warming temperatures.”

“We’re in a different climate now…. “It’s not conducive to regrowing them. It’s a one-way process.”

The Brothers Brick has one of the first images from the new upcoming LEGO set: 4999 Vestas Windmill. It’s motorized wind tower that stands over two feet. Sadly, you cant set a whole bunch up in your backyard to help power your home by wind. In fact, it uses energy rather than creates it. But it looks AWESOME!

What’s your favorite LEGO set?

If you want to do a little reading about the oil crisis before you fire up your car and hit the gas, I reccommend heading over to TomDispatch to read Dilip Hiro’s piece called The Current Oil Shock : No Relief in Sight. In it Hiro, author of Blood of the Earth: The Battle for the World’s Vanishing Oil Resources, looks at how the “the present oil shock can’t be compared to the three shocks that preceded it and then explores just where the planet is likely to look in the medium term for energy (and global warming) relief.”

He also explores why it is so important for the West to take charge:

When it comes to energy conservation, there is a far greater opportunity for saving in the affluent societies of the West than anywhere else in the world. An average American uses twice as much oil as a Briton, a Briton twice as much as a Russian, and a Russian eight times as much as an Indian. It was therefore perverse of U.S. energy secretary Sam Bodman to focus on the way the Chinese and Indian governments subsidize oil products to provide relief to their citizens — and to urge their energy ministers to cut those subsidies to ‘reduce demand.’

Al Gore Fights Climate ChangeThis morning former Vice President, Academy Award winner, Emmy Award winner, and Nobel laureate (whew) Al Gore gave a speech at Constitution Hall in Washington DC  to press Congress and the President to take action on climate change.  In the speech he called for the US to make all of its electricity from carbon-free sources in 10 years, saying that “the survival of the United States of America as we know it is at risk.”  Mr. Gore went on to chastise the administration for reliance on foreign oil and plans for Arctic and offshore drilling.

The speech was part of Mr. Gore’s new We Can Solve The Climate Crisis campaign that is brought together countless of celebrities from opposite ends of the spectrum (think Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich) demanding that we work together to fight global warming and carbon emissions.

In addition to supporing We Can Solve The Climate Crisis, there are lots of ways you can step up and takepart to fight climate change:
