The One Campaign always has great videos to get their message out and their latest is no exception.  Just out yesterday on YouTube, the newest One Campaign piece begins with the positive, something I always like, and celebrates all we have done to make the world better.  It then goes into what we still need to do, which it seems is a lot:

The video, called “Celebrate Accelerate” was made for the Sept. 25 UN Summit and was shown to a group of world leaders at the Secretary General’s reception.  Let’s hope they took the message to heart.

A star-studded cast of artists celebrated Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday with a giant concert in London on Friday in support of his global AIDS campaign, 46664. Watch this video of Amy Winehouse performing “Free Nelson Mandela” at the concert.

46664 is an African response to the global HIV AIDS epidemic that invites the whole world to take the fight in hand. It’s our aim to raise awareness overall and educate the younger generations in particular. By gaining global backing for the cause, 46664 will also raise funds to directly assist the many HIV AIDS

Singer Kelly Rowland took an AIDS test in Africa to raise awareness of the disease. Rowland took the test while in Nairobi on Thursday to help reduce the stigma of the disease in the country, where people fear discrimination if they are tested.

“Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to HIV infection, and it is important for everyone to know their HIV status,” she said. “The quicker you know your status, the sooner you can receive treatment if you’re HIV+, and reduce the risk of inadvertently infecting future partners.” Rowland is in Africa as the first ever Ambassador for MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation, and hopes to help the people of Kenya get the disease under control. HIV/AIDS is at pandemic levels through much of Africa, with UNAIDS-the United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS – estimating that more than 22 million adults and children are living with the disease on the continent. The singer also took the time to visit the 2008 recipients of the Staying Alive Foundation’s grants, who have been chosen for their efforts to encourage, educate and empower their peers in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Elizabeth Pisani’s new book The Wisdom of Whores examines AIDS research and treatment and how bureaucracy plays a role in both. More than that though, she offers an alternative to a system she sees as broken:

“It would mean spending lots more of the available money on prostitutes, addicts, and gay guys, and lots less on school kids, pregnant women, and church groups,” Pisani writes. “It would mean making fun things (sex, drugs) safe, instead of trying to make safe things (abstinence, monogamy) fun.” [NPR]

Sounds good to me…

takepart to learn more from Pisani in her NPR Fresh Air interview and also
takepart to read her blog, a funny yet serious series of posts about AIDS, sexuality, sex and reality - this opening was perhaps one of the best things I have read in some time

AIDS Walk New York brought out over 45,000 participants yesterday to do their part in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The 23rd Annual walk through New York City’s Central Park helped raise over $7 Million for the fight against the deadly disease. Event organizers said the total was the largest ever mount raised by and AIDS Walk in the United States. The walk couldn’t have come at a better time as the number of HIV Infections worldwide is increasing.

Said AIDS Walk New York Founder and Producer Craig R. Miller:

“Despite the economic downturn, tens of thousands of compassionate people, supported by corporate sponsors and the entertainment community came out to fill the streets with hope and to raise a record-setting $7.05 million to support people living with HIV/AIDS in New York City and the tri-state area. New Yorkers stated loudly and clearly that the critical work of Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) and more than the 50 other HIV/AIDS service organizations must be supported if we are to see an end to the domestic AIDS crisis,”

Another Mother’s Day has passed (I hope you had a good one) but luckily for you the Top 10 Movie Moms are available all year round - here’s the final Top 10 - including 2 new ones not yet profiled! Keep in mind these Moms may not be the most typical (they’re all actually pretty unique) , but they are definitely the most dynamic and interesting to watch on the screen.

10. Carol White in Todd Haynes’ Safe

A disturbing and eeery portrait of a California housewife and step-mom that suddenly turns sick from the chemicals in the air is in part an attack of suburban culture and in part a more general metaphor for the AIDS epidemic. But these social critiques aside, Julianne Moore’s turn as Carol White is a fascinating look at a woman who wants more that to run a house. The scene of Carol at a pals baby shower, when a young child is sitting on her lap as she starts to experience an attack will sit with you for some time… As will the last moment of the film. It’s a true testament to the side our mother’s keep to themselves…

And even though Carol may have had other problems, to ensure we all have clean air to breathe!

Everyone’s talking about the Greatest Living America, but I wanted to write about what I consider to be the Greatest Living American Comic Book with a Message: O+Men. As if we need yet another comic book about a team of superheroes of all races, genders and sexualities, who are HIV+! Really, though, it’s pretty cool. The artist, who used to work for Marvel, “wanted to show people that you could still be powerful with HIV” and “educate young people about the virus and how to avoid it, without being preachy.” So he created O+Men. O+Men: Negative came out last year, and O+ Men: Positive comes out later this month. Read the full story below. And by visiting the great website for Walker’s other comics series about Delete. And then by buying O+ Men: Positive

Independent comic book writer and artist Robert Walker has turned to comics as his medium to combat the physical and social epidemics that plague the globe, namely HIV/AIDS. Walker, who founded the comic studio DIGITAL NOIXE, is the creator of Delete, a super-hero epic that highlights racial issues and the dangers of technology. Delete led to the upcoming spinoff series The O+Men, about a team of superheroes afflicted with HIV/AIDS. The O+Men debuted in May 2007 with the first of two prologue issues entitled The O+Men: Negative. The second prologue issue, The O+Men: Positive, will be released in late May 2008.
