I love this! Check out The Daily Shows Samantha Bee asking folks at the Republican National Convention about Bristol Palin’s pregnancy and her “choice” to keep the baby. My favorite quote is “politics should stay out of people’s business.” Why yes, yes they should. Enjoy!

This month, Charity Water is turning two years old, and they’re launching the September birthday initiative to fund wells in Ethiopia. They’re asking everyone born in September to give up birthday presents and ask their friends and family for donations instead.

It all started last year when charity: water founder Scott Harrison was turning 32. He asked everyone he knew for $32 donations to build a well in Kenya, Africa in lieu of birthday gifts. He then asked everyone born in September to join him. In a remarkable seven weeks, $159,000 was raised and 100% of the money went to build water systems at 3 hospitals and 1 school.

In one month, Charity Water hopes to raise $1.5 million and build 333 wells in Ethiopia. This will serve 150,000 people with the most basic need, and greatly improve health and quality of life.

takepart and visit http://www.charitywater.org to help build wells by asking your friends and family for dollars instead of gifts this year.

With the Stand Up 2 Cancer ( standup2cancer.org) telethon/celebrity extravaganza set to air tomorrow night, I got to thinking about cancer. I’ve had a few family members who’ve had it, but they all survived and lived elsewhere, meaning I didn’t much have contact with cancer itself. In fact, the closest I’ve probably come to cancer is in the movies and on TV. And as cancer is something that seems to have an impact on almost everyone these days, it’s good that there are films out there that deal with it - and thus help us all deal with it.

Below are my Top 10 Cancer Movies - some are real weepies, others simply address the spirit of living while we can. The film directly below however, looks at it from a different perspective…

10. Fight Club - When Edward Norton’s character starts to attend cancer group support meeting to help him sleep we get a sneak peak into the dark world of dealing with cancer. As the movie goes on we get an important message about how we should live our lives. Although I have to say, that white ball of healing light thing has never helped me….

The video from my brother’s cell phone is of the family cleaning up the branches and trees damaged by Hurricane Gustav in Baton Rouge, LA. My father was lucky this time around; while there was a lot to cleanup, no trees fell on any of the house (as they did during Hurricane Katrina). This will be a familiar site over the next few days as people take advantage of breaks in the weather to clean up.

We’ve gotten lots of comments over the last two days - thanks everyone for their input and concerns… similarly, if you had a question we’re doing our best to get back to you as soon as possible. It’s really inspiring to see how our blog is helping keep people connected and help create social action. Also, a lot of the comments have noted that because New Orleans didn’t flood, the national media seems to have traded in the still devastating disaster for the Republican National Convention. Let’s be clear - while New Orleans fared well, normal life in Baton Rouge and surrounding area has ground to a halt and won’t be back to normal for quite some time. Updates after the jump including hospitals, areas with no clean water, and Southern manners…

Time flies and tomorrow night marks the historic Stand Up 2 Cancer broadcast on all 3 major networks. We’ve been bringing you news about this exciting effort to make a huge dent in curing cancer since it was announced in late May and are looking forward to the broadcast tomorrow night.

In the meantime, give a watch to the video below. It helps explain the financial model of Stand Up 2 Cancer, features animation from Jim Cooper (creator of “Why We Fight,” the popular viral video outlining the WGA’s position during the Writers Strike) and is narrated by Paul Rudd.

Being vegan rocks…. except of course when it comes to fashion. Many of the hippest hottest fashions for our bodies and our feet are still made with animals, making it hard to be on the forefront of fashion and the forefront of animal activism.

Natalie Portman, as you know if you’re a regular TakePart reader, decided to do something about it and designed some awesome vegan shoes. And here she is talking about them:
