Are Jim Lehrer, Gwen Ifill and Tom Brokaw putting you to sleep in their roles as debate moderators? Perhaps you ought to tune into the Puerto Rico Governor’s race where none other than Daddy Yankee has been slated to host an upcoming debate between the candidates tonight. The reggaeton star, and performer of the genre’s biggest hit ever “Gasolina“, whose real name is Ramon Ayala will be hosting the event in an effort to draw more young voters to the polls come election day.
I say “Why not?”. The Presidential debates so far have not exactly exhibited the most hard hitting journalism in the history of the profession. If nothing else, Daddy Yankee could bring something unique to the format that very well might bring more young Puerto Ricans out to the polls. Plus, the man is no stranger to politics, having formally endorsed Republican Presidential nominee John McCain at a joint event with the Arizona Senator earlier this year. The endorsement garnered one of the more memorable lines of the campain from McCain, “Thank you, Daddy Yankee.”
