Silicon Valley star Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, Pownce and Revision3, has proposed an idea on his blog that could be the next big thing in cleantech – a power management system that allows people to control their home devices remotely via the web. The notion of being able to turn your lights or your air conditioning on/off from a coffee shop has been batted around for awhile in tech circles, but Rose has a few new ideas up his sleeve…
Here’s more on Rose’s idea from Earth2tech.com:
Similar to Tendril’s recently unveiled energy management system, Rose’s proposed idea which in an attempt to pitch to Apple he calls iPower would include a base station that wirelessly communicates with a number of WiFi-enabled wall plugs to turn attached devices on and off. Rose’s value-add to the idea is integrating it with your phone’s GPS. By occasionally pinging your phone’s GPS, the system would know when you’d left home, prompting it to, for example, turn off the lights that you left on. And you could control the system remotely over the Internet through either your phone or computer.

I’m pretty sure X11 has been doing it for years now, but giving it that Apple touch could go a long way towards adoption.
I recommend simply sensing if your iPhone is gone by Rendezous rather than an external connection all the time. If you want to turn off your iPhone, surely there’s some script to run as it shuts down telling nothing to reset for X # of hours, or whatever.
