It’s no fun when you’re trying to eat healthy on-the-run, and think your only options are one of those Shake-N-Salad things from Micky D’s or a Chicken Whopper, hold the mayo. Luckily, the wonderful world of food service is finally catching on that we want healthier, more sustainable food options that are compatible with our busy schedules. Check out these 5 additional organic alternatives to fast food below:

1) Jamba Juice - Alright, so there’s some controversy over whether or not Jamba Juice uses organic produce in their juices and smoothies, but you can’t deny that it’s fast, filling, and deliciously better for you than a box of Chicken McNo-Nos on the go. Plus, they’re everywhere! Find out who else has given McDonalds the heave-ho here.

2) Better Burger - A great fast food alternative for non-veggie and veggie New Yorkers on the run and on a budget. Organic meat burgers are $5, and they also serve up organic poultry, organic air-baked, low fat fries, organic vegetarian chili and fresh fruit juices at four locations in the Big Apple.

3) Panera Bread - While not everything on the menu at Panera is organic, their breads do contain whole wheat, unbleached, ultra grain enriched flour. Also, if you’ve got kids in tow, they offer organic milk and apple juice on the children’s menu. Kids meals come with a Horizon Farms organic squeeze yogurt, which undoubtedly will be fun for them to play with OR eat.

4) O’Naturals - An organic fast-food chain created by Gary Hirshberg, CEO Stonyfield Farm organic yogurt giant. Stuff yourself silly with organic options ranging from flatbread chicken sandwiches to pizza, soups and salads. Lucky you if you live near one of their four locations in Maine and Massachusetts.

5) BYOO: Bring Your Own Organic - You never have to guess what’s in your food if you make it yourself. Organic dried fruit snacks from Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods are a favorite of mine, and are great for busy people who want to pack light and leave the mess in the kitchen.

  1. They may well be organic but each drink is a meal in itself. Have you ever read the file of ingredients and stats that each shop has opposite the juice counter? Next time you go in, have a look at the sugar content of these drinks. I stopped drinking their mixed drinks because the sugar calorie content was over 600. Instead, go in for a freshly squeezed orange and carrot mix with less than half the sugar calories as their fancy named drinks.

  2. I enjoyed the article, but like Ginger would urge caution and pay attention to what’s really in the food? Just because they have the right words, doesn’t mean they have the right food.
