Well, we finally missed one. After managing to post on Earth Day, Arbor Day, and even World Environment Day, it seems that World Ocean Day fell through the cracks this weekend. We are ashamed.
World Ocean Day, which to be fair is still an unofficial day (though I have no idea how the validity of something like Arbor Day is nationally or internationally accredited), passed us by yesterday, June 8. There was even a big party for the event of which ecorazzi got some pictures, with celebrities such as Ted Danson taking a break from drumming for R.E.M.’s tour for the occasion.
The day has been celebrated for 15 years, says Oceana, the ocean conservation organization that co-threw the party yesterday. The group’s mission is simple. It hopes to
make our oceans as rich, healthy and abundant as they were in our grandparents’ youth. We look to a future in which dolphin sightings are common along any temperate coast; in which the mighty swordfish, marlin and tuna are abundant once again; in which whales and sea turtles thrive, cod are plentiful on both sides of the Atlantic, local fishing cultures evolve rather then decline and in which fish are a safe, growing and plentiful source of food around the world.
In accordance with that mission, the organization is vocal on a wide range of issues that are having a negative impact on the oceans, and thus also on the possibility to a sequel to The Blue Planet, which would be a terrible travesty.
The group is asking your support in signing a petition that will be sent to the United Nations requesting that June 8 officially be declared World Ocean Day. takepart here to add your name.
