Really, everyone is standing up to cancer:
The Big Three television networks NBC, CBS and ABC have never done anything like it before. On Friday, Sept. 5, their news anchors Brian Williams, Katie Couric and Charles Gibson, respectively will sit on one set for a commercial-free, prime-time simulcast entitled Stand Up to Cancer. [MSNBC]
Major League Baseball is teaming up with entertainers, foundations, businesses and three of the top four television networks — ABC, CBS and NBC — in the quest to find a cure for cancer.
The new initiative, called “Stand Up To Cancer,” was introduced on Wednesday morning on all three networks and at press conferences at the Paley Center for Media in New York. It will also be introduced in Beverley Hills later today.
“This initiative has presented an historic and unique plan to fight this deadly disease, and it is a privilege for me and Major League Baseball to join this magnificent effort,” said Commissioner Bud Selig, a survivor of skin cancer. “We have pledged many of our valuable resources in an attempt to assist in every way we can.” [MLB]

I lost my grandfather after his 10 year fight with prostate cancer in 2005. I lost an Uncle to Leukemia cancer six years before I was born because there was no cure for leukemia at the time, back in 1963. I lost my one living Uncle to lung cancer after his 2 year fight with lung cancer about 2 and one half weeks ago. I want to know more because chances are four decades from now, I may die of lung or prostate cancer. How can I extend my life then?
william michaelI am interested to know how you stand up to the ceo’s of the companies running our economy but killing our environment (and us) with their engineered chemicals, drugs, vaccines, and fossil fuels.
Rachel Carson was trying to get to the ceo’s in the 60’s.
Dr. David Suzuki has been trying since then.
Who will these powerful men listen to?
Let’s all stand up and force our government to protect us from those who take wealth while undermining our children’s health!
lora brunckeI think it’s wonderful what this group is doing. There are some heavy hitting organizations on board, including the American Cancer Society, the Susan B Komen Foundation….
but it is important to be aware that no pediatric cancer groups were invited to be a part of it and none of the money raised is slated to go to any pediatric cancer research groups.
Somethings that are pretty unknown but people should be aware of
The American Cancer Society gives less than 1% of it’s funds to pediatric cancer research. Do you know what the most common pediatric cancer is? Well, it’s leukemia. And yet, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society gives less than 5% of their funds to pediatric cancer. (But they love to have our kids involved in their Team in Training, as “front men” for their groups. Nothing like a bald headed sad little kid to pull in the dollars, huh?)
Ok, why is it important for funds to be given to pediatric cancers, as opposed to adult cancers?
Because, kids cancers are different. They have different causes, different treatments. Kids are so far behind adults, when it comes to knowing what chemos work, what cells mutations are involved, etc. Kids get more chemotherapy, for longer periods of time, at higher doses, than adults…..reread that, it’s true. They just dont know what works for kids, so they bombard them with high doses of chemos.
You wont see an adult get 2.5 years of more than 10 different chemotherapy agents, for frontline treatment of leukemia.
There has only been ONE new drug developed in the last 20 years for pediatric cancer….ONE. Yet, survival rates for kids with leukemia have improved dramatically over the last 20 years. Why? Because of the number of children, like Marielle, who are or were involved in clinical trials. More than 90% of the children are in clinical trials, as opposed to less than 20% of adults.
So our kids are on the forefront of trying new and different combinations of drugs, yet funding is far behind adult cancers.
So, what can you do?
1. Please join our group at Stand Up 2 cancer…it’s called “Kids with Cancer”. We are hoping that if enough people join, we can influence the directors to funnel some monies to pediatric cancer. It’s free to join, just go to Standup2cancer.org and register.
2. Email Stand up 2 cancer and let them know that it is not acceptable to leave out pediatric cancers.
As a mother of a beautiful 6 year old girl with cancer I had to share this. Thank you so much
SamThey haven’t left out pediatric cancers. Pediatric cancers will be considered as areas of focus in research that gets funded. take a look at their funding model. it’s on the website. The point is it’s for all cancer types.

I didn’t agree with you first, but last paragraph makes sense for me

Stand Up to Cancer, The Show | TakePart Blog Network June 30, 2008 | 9:04 am ESTI lost my father to cancer when I was 12 years old. It left in emptiness in my life since then. Back in 1980, the treatment did not exist to treat the cancer. I have other relatives that have died of bone and lung cancer. It’s a terrible disease and if the right companies can step up to the plate with financial backing to help find cures, then a lot of people will be able to enjoy what time they have in their lives with their friends and family.
KathleenGina,
There is no need for anyone to died from cancer. I gave you the cure for all forms of cancer. Let them choose to use the cure or not. It doesn’t interact with any know treatment. The total cost to cure any form of cancer is less than $ 30.00.
Just let someone try it. The reaction will be within the same day as the person will start to fell better.
Why do you think that the right companies can step up to the plate with financial backing to help find cures. The bottom line is the companies make hundreds of thousands of dollars on each person and that includes your doctors who get paid directly an extra bonus of $ 150,000 to $ 200,000 on each experimental drug.
There is no way than those so called doctors are going against the other doctors who have stop all the cures coming out to the general population so far.
If we can map the DNA structure of the human being and your telling me we couldn’t find a cure for cancer!!!!
Just think in your hands is the cure for all forms of cancer, and a lot of people will be able to enjoy what time they have in their lives with their friends and family. It’s your call.
Send my email to several friends and lets see what will happen.
Best regards,
William N. Simmons
P.S. A grandmother has ask me for the cure for her son who was told yesterday that he has Leukemia. If he takes the cure. Just how many days does it take to cure Leukemia??? As the other people who was cured had other forms of cancer besides the Leukemia so it should be fast.
