Looks like Americans want to be taxed on gas - an unusual turn of events because as Grist.org notes, it’s the first time in at least a generation that the American public has expressed a willingness to be taxed more, as opposed to less, for energy. A CBS News/NY Times poll found that 49 percent of Americans think suspending the gasoline tax this summer is a bad idea. It was a narrow 4 percentage point margin, with 45 percent approving (5 percent of poll takers abstained).
Suspending the 18.4-cents-a-gallon federal gas tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day would save Americans a rough total of $20 to $30 dollars. Over 150 scientists issued a statement over the weekend outlining that a suspension of the tax this summer would be a bad idea, as it would generate more profits for oil companies rather than lessen the burden on consumers. Also, it would do nothing to encourage conservation. In fact, the tax lift could actually backfire by increasing demand, which would subsequently lead to a rise in prices.
Whether you’re for or against the tax, spending less on gas is a good thing for your wallet and the environment.
