Beginning March 7th, NBC11 of the San Francisco Bay area became the first television station in the United States to be powered entirely by wind. Using these wind farms for 100 percent of their electricity is part of the studio’s “EcoLogic” campaign, designed to show employees, local businesses and viewers alike that they too can improve their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint on the environment.

“NBC11 kicked off the campaign internally in January with an appeal to employees to reduce electricity consumption by simply turning off unnecessary lighting and shutting down computers and equipment when not in use.

After two consecutive months of reduced electricity usage, NBC11 invested in Renewable Energy Certificates to offset the electricity used by the station’s San Jose studios and to help fund wind energy providers.”

NBC11 will air EcoLogic news updates featuring information on the station’s use of renewable energy, recycling programs, landscaping practices, water use, and employee commuting. Viewers will be able to see a realistic cost/benefit analysis of the EcoLogic programs as they’re set into motion.

“This is not a hollow marketing tactic. We are taking a very frank appraisal of our carbon footprint, and will take our viewers through the process as we make changes and improvements to our building and our lives,” said NBC11 President and General Manager Richard Cerussi.
