Public Alpha: have suggestions or feedback?
Anti-abortion advocates spun the theme from the kids flick “Horton Hears a Who!” to support their cause. The films motto: “After all, a person is a person, no matter how small” has now become some sort of pro-life proclamation causing protesters to rally at movie’s Hollywood premiere.
All hell broke loose at the Hollywood premiere of “Horton Hears a Who!” today when a group of pro-lifers infiltrated the screening, then chanted anti-abortion slogans after the flick. The stars in attendance included Victoria Beckham and her three kids, Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy, Steve Carell and all 12 contestants from “American Idol.”
After the chanting ended, the group put red tape over their mouths that said “Life” on them, and paraded around the event.
Shouts of protest were returned by some in attendance, including, “This is a kid’s premiere,” “How dare you,” and “Do you really care that much about this?” [TMZ]
This isn’t the first time Horton has heard himself involuntarily being used to support ant-abortion views; the American Life League published a pamphlet using the phrase as the title. Dr. Seuss’ widow, Audrey Geisel was against this action and in 2001 filed a lawsuit to stop the use of the phrase for pro-life purposes. Before his death, Dr. Seuss ( Theodor Seuss Geisel) also threatened to sue a pro-life group for using the phrase.

I must say it amazes me that such a small group could cause such an uproar in L.A. Then again if you think about the movie, how the kangaroos were out to kill the whos, sounds like a kangaroo court to me who established Roe Vs. Wade in 1973. And “A Persons A Person No Matter How Small”.. sounds to me like a parallel to the unborn. I mean the most silenced people group in our nation. I don’t think these guys are saying that Dr. Seuss wrote “A Persons A Person No Matter How Small” about the ending of abortion… they are saying God wrote “A Persons A Person No Matter How Small” for the ending of abortion. Its an offensive message I know… and I am glad to see America faced with truth.
Missy Lou WhoAfter all “we must create a world were all persons have 3 unalienable rights.” I commend those kids with “red life tape” over their mouths and I don’t think this will be the last you see of them.
Those pro-lifers should now be ashamed of themselves.
They are using nasty methods to force their beliefs on innocent bystanders.
Few woman would terminate a pregnancy without emotion after really looking at the options.
Also, teenage rape victims carrying babies that have a relative as a father, need to be cared for.
No issue is black and white anymore. We should really be looking at middle of the road solutions to these emotional issues.
As a mother of two children, I feel a special link to Horton.
After I uncovered an issue regarding the World Health Organization, known as WHO, and certain big business marketing practices, I felt like Horton hearing a WHO!
Oh, All the Thinks I Can Think thanks to Dr. Seuss and his books!
I recently read in Discover that the Dr. Seuss legacy joins such giants as Einstein, Elvis, John Lennon and George Harrison.
lora brunckeAll these great men are still influencing millions of people!
Long live Horton and his WHO!
Seuss was pro-choice, and all for gay marriage, so is his wife who is still alive. His message was simply to tell kids that we are all important, to help kids who are alive and who have to deal with other kids and learn to respect them. The kids at the theater were probably totally creeped out. It won’t be the last we see of people showing dead babies to little kids, instead of pushing for programs to help kids who need it.

Amanda-If you want to volunteer to help kids fortunate enough to be born alive, please do, and please do what you can to recruit others to help you in your mission to work with needy born-alive children.
These folks most likely are already helping needy born-alive children in some volunteer capacity, but that doesn’t mean they can’t also convey a very important message to children and adults alike that EVERY life deserves to be born and that every voice should be heard–even the voice of the unborn muffled by the womb.
We should celebrate the courage of these pro-lifers to point out what Theodore Geisel apparently only knew on a very sub-conscious level.
JaneFrom all the articles I’ve looked at so far, not one has mentioned that there were any ‘dead baby pics’ present at the red-tape protest. Though I find it incredibly easy to parallel the themes in “Horton” with the pro-life movement, Mr. Geisel’s obvious disapproval of the plagiarism of his work must be acknowledged.

Takepart Top 10 Weekly Roundup! | TakePart Blog Network March 14, 2008 | 2:55 pm ESTThe respect for life message in “Horton Hears a Who.” whether it was intended or not, is completely consistent with the other Horton book, “Horton Hatches and Egg” which I would encourage others to read if they have not done so already. I rather doubt the second book will be made into a move.
TomAlthough I’m an abortion survivor and value life at all stages, I am sorry that the people attending the LA opening weren’t left to absorb the endearing story of Horton Hears a Who through the quiet confidence that the human spirit strains to hear the voice of reason, even if its a faint whisper passing on a tiny speck. I loved the movie; I’ve seen it 5 times. I’ve been surprised to learn that every time I “hear” yet another valuable life lesson unfolding in this precious and brilliantly written movie. And yes, I said “brilliant.” Regardless of your position on abortion, the wisdom imparted in this precious children’s story will endure through the ages long after the fight over the right and wrong of abortion is over.
