Some post-writers strike sentiments lingered as Hollywood celebrated the 80th Annual Academy Awards last night. Variety reports that many like NBC prexy Jeff Zucker, acknowledged the celebratory feel caused by the Oscars happening and the strike ending saying “I think everybody was ready for a party, and to enjoy the chance to come and to have a grand time.”

Others still had left-over thoughts from the recent strike events such as best actor nominee George Clooney who repeated his strong wish that the Screen Actors Guild help the rank and file in his union stay employed by starting talks as soon as possible. “There’s no resolution yet,” he said. “We’re talking to all parties. We’re hoping to avoid a strike.”

Sumner Redstone summed up the night’s feelings, saying, “The industry is facing a lot of issues, and facing them successfully,” he said. “We have plenty to celebrate.”

Not suprisingly John Stewart made the funniest mentions of the strike during his fabulous role as the evening’s hosts saying :

“Tonight we look beyond the dark days to focus on happier fare — this year’s slate of Oscar-nominated psychopathic killer movies… Does this town need a hug?”

“These past 3-1/2 months have been very tough…I’m happy to say that the fight is over. So tonight, welcome to the makeup sex.”

“Vanity Fair magazine canceled their Oscar party out of respect for the writers. You know another way they could show respect for the writers? Maybe one day invite some of them to the Vanity Fair Oscar party…Don’t worry. They won’t mingle.”

Could John Stewart be more loveable? Yes, when he brought Marketa Irglova, the adorable Best Original Song co-winner back on stage for a second chance to give an acceptance speech for the song. I realize that it was the decision of the show producers to give Marketa her speech time, but John was so sweet in his intro for Marketa and I am a sucker for hilarious, sweet comedians.
