The Egyptian government has banned several Western secular books from the 40th Cairo International Book Fair, which is the largest in the Arab world and will attract over two million people. Banned authors include Milan Kundera and Mohamed Choukri. Egyptian authorities haven’t explained why the books were confiscated, nor were the publishers informed or the books returned, said Rana Idriss, director of Dar al-Adab, a Lebanese publishing house. Many of the banned works discuss controversial topics such as gender roles, homosexuality, and drug use.

Sadly, book banning happens in the good ol’ US of A too. Stop this assault on intellectual freedom and by learning about the American Library Association Book Banning Week, and also about what you can do to further library advocacy.

One Response to “Books Censored at 40th Annual Cairo Book Fair”

  1. Sounds like regression, which seems strange for that part of the world.
As the cradle of civilization, their history goes back to the beginning of Man’s written word.
I travelled North Africa in the 70’s and loved every minute of it - the people, the land and the culture. In Libya, the desert comes right up to the beach for miles. It is an amazing drive. The people we met were the nicest people I met my whole life and I have been many places. The Egyptians loved us and treated us with kindness and respect.
During the Crusades, I read that the men in the Arab countries all spoke the same language. No Babel for them.
We must go forward, not back. Censorship stops the building of knowledge.
Not good now that we know we are in grave danger of becoming extint as a species.
Mind you, if it is porn that the are censoring I am all for it. Porn is not freedom to speak, but freedom to abuse.
    Lora
