America’s “War on Terror” is one of the trickier issues in this year’s campaign. With Americans becoming increasingly anti-war, the candidates are having a much harder time deciding which stance to take on Iraq and Afghanistan. Not to mention that many folks are concerned about domestic issues and the large amounts of money being allocated for the wars that seem never-ending.

While the Democratic candidates are talking a lot about pulling troops out if they’re elected, the man we did “elect” last time, keeps on sending more over, spending more money and time on the things that the candidates are talking about putting a stop to. This time the additional troops are headed to Afghanistan, and there will be 3,000, all marines.

The increase comes after reports that things are heating up in Afghanistan:

The move to send additional combat forces is in response to request by General Dan McNeill, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan and has been approved by Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen and CENTCOM Commander Admiral William Fallon. Defense officials say the plan will go before Defense Secretary Robert Gates for final approval on Friday.

The Marines will move out quickly. The plan is to get them on the ground and in the fight by April — in time to respond to an expected spring offensive by the Taliban.

Defense officials tell ABC News that General McNeill has said he needs a total of 7,500 additional troops in Afghanistan. But with the military stretched thin in Iraq, this is all he can expect to get for now, they said. [ABC News]

One thing that has been misunderstood by many are the difference between the war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan. While one country (Afghanistan) actually had a connection to 9/11, one did not (Iraq), yet Bush is unwilling to actually deploy our soldiers in ways that reflect the above. While troops should have been sent home from Iraq long ago, at the very least, increasing troops in Afghanistan should mean troops being cut back in Iraq.
