
Before the mission could even begin, U.N. peacekeeping chief Jean-Marie Guehenno was already warning that the force could be a failure. With attacks on international aid workers increased 150 percent over 2007, it’s hoped that a new, strongly-equipped U.N. force can finally put some firepower behind attempts to protect civilians and prevent violence. But that force has yet to be deployed, despite pleas from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Without a peace to keep, Darfur faces yet another cruel year in 2008.
