Whites are more likely to be prescribed narcotics by emergency room doctors than people of color - even for severe pain ““ says a recent study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study reviewed narcotics distribution for over 150,000 emergency room visits in both urban and rural areas for various types of pain. Linda Simoni-Wastila of the University of Maryland says that the race gap could indicate suspicions by doctors that people of color are more likely to lie about having pain in order to acquire narcotics, while overlooking drug abuse in white patients. The data breakdown of narcotics distribution for 2,000 emergency room visits related to kidney stones was 72 percent white, 68 percent Hispanic, 67 percent Asian, and 56 percent black.
