The website challenges you to guess the meaning of a word, and for every word you get right, freerice.com donates 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. Doesn’t sound like much? Consider this: the site, which just launched in October, had donated 9,868,446,910 grains of rice as of yesterday.Freerice.com, which is sponsored by advertisers, was the brainchild of John Breen, a 49-year-old computer programmer who also founded the website poverty.com, created in January 2007 “for all people around the world who want to end poverty,” according to its website.Breen’s hit on a terrific way to tackle two problems in one fell swoop; our impoverished vocabularies, and our undernourished nations. I’d say he’s killed two birds with one stone, except that, being the nature lover that I am, I really hate that expression.
