Don’t Bet on Biofuels

Biofuels aren’t so hot when it comes to cooling the planet, according to a new survey from the World Conservation Union. The survey, just released at the UN climate conference in Bali, “suggests professionals have more confidence in bicycles than in biofuels,” according to the BBC.

The survey asked 1,000 professionals from government, NGOs and industry in 105 countries to rate 18 low carbon technologies on their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “First generation” biofuels from agricultural crops, such as corn-based ethanol, came in dead last.

Maybe that’s because, as the BBC reports, “in Indonesia and elsewhere, forests are being cleared for palm oil plantations, partly to produce biofuels.” Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

  1. Read this book to get the complete picture. http://www.energyvictory.net/ There are a lot more plus than minuses to energy independence with liquid fuels that are not toxic, no not support islamo-terrorism, do not introduce new CO2, and give the third world a fighting chance to break out of poverty.
