Ed Begley Jr., Hollywood’s number one champion of conservation, hopes to inspire his industry colleagues to curb their carbon footprint at the Hollywood Goes Green summit, a two-day conference that starts tomorrow at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Begley Jr.’s been pushing pedal power and low-impact living all by his lonesome for decades, now, so it’s great to see that the film and TV industry is getting up to speed on the need to create entertainment that’s more environmentally friendly both on screen and behind the scenes. Some 300 attendees are expected, according to the Los Angeles Times, “including TV, film and music executives, eco-entrepreneurs, and environmental and tech engineers.” The summit has several goals: finding ways to reduce the entertainment industry’s use of resources, through, for example, incorporating more energy efficient set design; and using Hollywood’s undisputed influence to promote green themes in film and tv storylines. The conference will feature a speech on the economic benefits of going green from Allen Hershkowitz, the Natural Resources Defense Council’s senior scientist. And the Volt, GM’s eagerly awaited electric car, will make a cameo appearance. Begley Jr.’s the only celebrity slated to speak at Hollywood Goes Green, but any industry executive who’s serious about signing on to a more sustainable way of making films and TV shows is a star in our green galaxy.
