I’ve been wanting to see the film “Waitress” since it first came out last year and Thursday night I finally got the chance to watch this delightful film. It shares the tale of Jenna, an unhappily married waitress and amazing pie maker who is saving money to escape her troubled marriage and enter a pie baking contest. In the midst of her plans she becomes unexpectedly pregnant and starts a love affair with her new doctor. The film really explores the desires of women, especially those trapped in a failing and/or abusive relationship and those terrified of motherhood ( a topic not often discussed in film). I loved this movie. “Waitress” not only inspired me as an actress and writer but also made me feel comforted about my own fears regarding love and motherhood. Sadly the films director, writer and co-star Adrienne Shelly was murdered in 2006. Following her death, Adrienne’s husband Andy established the Adrienne Shelly Foundation. Here, Waitress star Kerri Russell shares more on the Foundation’s mission:

Also check out this clip of Adrienne discussing her inspiration for  ”Waitress.”

The Adrienne Shelly Foundation supports theartistic achievements of female actors, writers and directors through a series of scholarships and grants, providing recipients with financial support and consultative access to the Foundation’s advisory board of actors, directors, producers, composers, law, publicity, academic and trade professionals. Reflecting Adrienne’s spirit, generosity, courage and whimsy, our goal is to recognize the tremendous passion and commitment of women artists in creating their own work, and provide them with support and guidance particularly during periods of transition and struggle. For more on the Adrienne Shelly Foundation and ways to support and/or apply for grants takepart and visit http://www.adrienneshellyfoundation.org.

  1. Yes, it is maddening to be a women and fear motherhood.
I am so sorry for Adrienne Shelly and many others.
I blame modern man’s medical blunders big time.
Kids are sicker now than ever.
Many babies will never leave the nest.
Many children will not survive their parents.
Pregnancy and feeding is now treated by doctors and baby formula companies.

Three cheers to Andy for being such a moral man!!!
    Mothers love men like him!
